Rajdeep Sardesai is an Indian news editor, journalist, and author. He is a consultant editor for the India Today Group and an anchor for India Today Television. Prior to his resignation in July 2014, he was Editor-in-Chief of Global Broadcast News, including CNN-IBN, IBN7, and IBN-Lokmat.

Rajdeep Sardesai Biography:

Rajdeep Sardesai was born on 24 May 1965 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, to Goan’s father and Gujarati’s mother. His dad’s name is Dilip Sardesai. He was a former cricketer of the Indian Test. His mother’s name is Nandini. She is an activist in Mumbai and a former head of the Department of Sociology at St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai.

He completed his schooling at the Campion School, Mumbai. He spent two years at the ISC Cathedral & John Connon School in Mumbai. He then graduated in Economics from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai. He then went to University College, Oxford, where he received a Master of Arts degree and a Bachelor of Laws degree.

While at Oxford he made six first-class cricket appearances at Oxford University and one at Oxford and Cambridge combined against the 1987 Pakistan Touring Team. He was awarded the Blue Cricket at Oxford.

He’s married to journalist and author Sagarika Ghose. Sardesai and Ghose have two children, Ishan’s son and Tarini’s daughter.

Career:

Sardesai worked with The Times of India for six years, after joining in October 1988. She was the City Editor of the Mumbai edition. In 1994, he worked in television journalism as political editor of New Delhi Television (NDTV). He was Managing Editor for both NDTV 24X7 and NDTV India. He was responsible for overseeing both the news policies. He hosted popular shows like The Big War on NDTV.


He left NDTV on 17 April 2005 to set up his own business, Global Broadcast News (GBN), in partnership with the American giant CNN and Raghav Bahl’s TV18. The latter broadcasts the Indian version of CNBC, CNBC-TV18, the Hindi market channel, CNBC Awaaz, and the foreign channel SAW. The new channel with Sardesai as Editor-in-Chief has been called CNN-IBN. It was airborne on December 17, 2005. Channel 7 also came under this umbrella after Sardesai’s company had acquired a 46% stake in the channel. Channel 7 was later changed to IBN7.

On 29 May 2014, Reliance Industries Ltd announced that it will acquire ownership of Network 18 Media & Investments Ltd, the parent of CNN-IBN, IBN7, and CNBC-TV18. The RIL Board approved funding of up to 40 billion to the Independent Media Trust (IMT), of which RIL is the sole beneficiary, for the acquisition of influence in Network 18 and its subsidiaries. Subsequently, on 1 July 2014, Rajdeep, editor-in-chief of CNN IBN, and the entire founding team – editorial and management – resigned from Network18.

Sardesai and others were acquitted by the Hyderabad Court in November 2019 after an unconditional apology was made to IPS officer Rajiv Trivedi for false reporting on Sohrabuddin’s alleged encounter with the murder case.

Controversy:

He was heavily haunted on social media on 13 August 2020 for posting fake news about Pranab Mukherjee’s death on Twitter. Later, he apologized for the same thing.

(b) The prize for coverage of the 2002 Gujarat riots by the International Broadcasters and the 2006 Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism award.
