S S Rajamouli was born on 10 October 1973, in Raichur, Karnataka, India. He was born to screenwriter K. V. Vijayendra Prasad and Raja Nandini. His ancestors are from the Andhra Pradesh town of Kovvur. His elementary and secondary education took place in Kovvur, and his higher education took place in Eluru. His mother was from Vizag, so he spent many years there.
