Originally known as the San Jose Clash, the team began to play in 1996 as one of the league’s foundations clubs. A 1–0 win over D.C. United marked the inaugural match in MLS history for the Earthquakes. The Earthquakes have won two MLS Cups, in 2001 and 2003, respectively.

After a two-year absence, the Earthquakes resumed play in 2008. Almeyda, an Argentinian, is currently in charge of the Quakes’ coaching staff. Earthquakes Stadium has served as the team’s home venue since 2015. (named Avaya Stadium from 2015 to 2019). From 2008 through 2014, the club played its home games at Santa Clara University’s Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Children and marginalized areas have been the focus of California’s Arts Council since its inception in 1963.

The Getty Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art have all been supported by a large number of wealthy art collectors in Southern California (1935). Located in Los Angeles, the Music Center of Los Angeles County was built in the 1960s thanks to private donations.

Dance recitals, plays and films, concerts, and lectures are all offered by tax-supported state institutions like the University of California and its extension program. Several theatres, notably the community-sponsored Old Globe Theater in San Diego and La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego, the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles, and the Magic Theatre in San Francisco, present a frequently distinct mix of light and avant-garde theatre throughout the year.

Community orchestras, chamber music societies, and guest artists, in addition to amateur theatre companies, are also common. In addition to the San Francisco Opera, the symphony orchestras of San Francisco and Los Angeles have gained international acclaim over the years. In 1985, the San Diego Symphony moved into its own downtown venue.

From skiing in the Sierra Nevada as far south as Big Bear Mountain in San Bernardino to surfing on California beaches, especially those from Santa Barbara to San Diego, to surfing-inspired skateboarding, the first major competition in which was held in Hermosa Beach in 1963.

The state of California boasts a wide variety of professional sports franchises, many of which were formerly based elsewhere and some of which have remained migratory. Prior to major league baseball moving west in the late 1950s, the Pacific Coast League had a reputation and glamour unlike any other minor league (e.g., before earning fame with the New York Yankees, San Francisco native Joe DiMaggio starred with his hometown Seals).

Both the National League’s San Diego Padres and the American League’s Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (both expansion teams) call California home, as do the American League’s Oakland Athletics and the National League’s San Diego Padres (previously located in Kansas City). Before returning to Los Angeles for the second time in 2016, the National Football League’s (NFL) Los Angeles Rams were based in St. Louis from 1995 to 2016.

Lakers, Kings, Clippers, Braves, and Warriors all have ties to Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Lakers were founded in Minneapolis and played in Kansas City, Omaha, and Cincinnati before moving to Sacramento. The Clippers began their career in San Diego before moving to Los Angeles as the Buffalo Braves.

For comparison’s sake, the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks, who have played in Los Angeles since the WNBA’s creation in 1997, dissolved in 2009 after being a founding member of the league. Unlike the Chargers, the San Francisco 49ers have remained in San Francisco, whereas the San Diego Chargers migrated to San Diego for 56 years before returning to Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles Kings, San Jose Sharks, and Anaheim Ducks all play in the National Hockey League, which has a better track record of financial stability. Greater Los Angeles is home to the LA Galaxy and Los Angeles FC, while the Earthquakes, California’s other Major League Soccer (football) franchise, call San Jose home.

Despite the prevalence of collegiate athletics in California, it is only possible to name a few notable programs. The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) has long been connected with college basketball, winning 10 NCAA titles in 12 years (1964–65, 1967–73, 1975) under coach John Wooden. UCLA’s crosstown foe, the University of Southern California, has achieved similar success in gridiron football. UC Berkeley and Stanford University are also members of the Pacific-12 Conference, as are both of these institutions.

Fresno State University’s football team, the pride of the San Joaquin Valley, receives far less attention. The “granddaddy” of all college football bowl games, the Rose Bowl takes place every year in Pasadena. In addition to athletics (including track and field), swimming, baseball, and volleyball, California schools and universities have a long history of success.
