Sharad Chandra Govindrao Pawar, most commonly known as Sharad Pawar, is an Indian politician. He has been the member and president of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) since 1999, after being disassociated from the Indian National Congress. In his political career, Sharad Pawar held key positions in both state and national politics. He served as Chief Minister of Maharashtra, as well as the Defense Minister of India. He is currently the Minister of Agriculture under the Government of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) headed by the National Congress of India.


He represents Maharashtra in the Lok Sabha district of Mahda and leads the delegation of the Nationalist Congress Party. He has been accused a number of times of involvement in corruption. From 2005 to 2008, he served as Chairman of the Control Board for Cricket in India. He also held the prestigious position of President of the International Cricket Council, succeeding David Morgan of England.

Sharad Pawar was born on December 12, 1940, to Shri Govindrao Pawar and Smt. It’s Shardabai Pawar. His father worked with Baramati Farmers’ Cooperative, also known as Sahakari Kharedi Vikri Sangh, and his mother used to take care of the family farm about 10 km away from Baramati in Katewadi. Sharad Pawar ‘s got five brothers and four sisters. He was educated at the Maharashtra Education Society College. He studied at the Brihan Maharashtra College of Commerce at Pune University.


Sharad Pawar married Pratibha Shinde on 1 August 1967; she had a daughter, Supriya, who was married to Sadanand Sule and is currently a member of the 15th Lok Sabha, representing Baramati in Maharashtra. Sharad Pawar’s younger brother Pratap is running Sakal, a famous Marathi daily, and his nephew Ajit Pawar is currently Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra. His interests include horticulture, agriculture, irrigation, economics, finance, energy, and sports. His favorite pastime is reading and he likes to travel a lot.

Sharad Pawar was an average student, although he was quite active in student politics. His passion for debate, his strong speaking skills, his ability in planning and coordinating outdoor events and sports were all early indications of his leadership qualities. His first political activity was his active participation and the organization of a protest march in 1956 in support of the Goa Liberation Movement.


He led the student leadership at the Brihan Maharashtra Commerce College (BMCC) and acted as Secretary-General. It marked his entrance into politics and his involvement with the Youth Congress. He came into contact with Yashwantra Chavan, who is considered to be the architect of modern Maharashtra. Chavan recognized his potential as a leader, and Sharad Pawar eventually became the leader of the Youth Congress. He was also a member of the Pradesh Congress State Committee.
