Sitaram Yechury is an Indian Marxist politician and the General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). The Communist Party of India (Marxist) is the biggest communist party in India. While Yechury was still a student at JNU in 1975, the government took him into custody during the Emergency. Before he was arrested, he spent some time coordinating opposition to the Emergency while he was hidden from the authorities. Following the conclusion of the Emergency, he successfully won the election to the position of President of the JNU Students’ Union three times within one year (1977–1988). Along with Prakash Karat, Yechury was a significant contributor to establishing an invincible Marxist stronghold at JNU.
Yechury was first chosen as the All-India Joint Secretary of SFI in 1978. He then rose through the ranks to become the All-India President of SFI. He was the first president of SFI who did not hail from Kerala or Bengal. He held that position for two terms. In 1984, he won a spot on the Central Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). In 1985, the party’s constitution was revised, and five younger stalwarts were chosen to serve in a central secretariat. These were Prakash Karat, Sunil Moitra, P. Ramachandran, and S. Ramachandran Pillai. Their responsibilities included carrying out the directives and controlling the activities of the politburo.
After that, he was elected to the Politburo at the party’s Fourteenth Congress in 1992. On April 19, 2015, he was chosen as the fifth General Secretary of the CPI(M) at the party’s 21st party Congress, which was held in Visakhapatnam. He and fellow politburo member S. Ramachandran Pillai were the frontrunners for the role; however, the latter decided to resign, which resulted in the former being unanimously selected for the position.
