Suga Biography:

Min Yoon-gi was born in Daegu, South Korea on March 9, 1993. He attended Taejeon Elementary School, Gwaneum Middle School, and Apgujeong High School.  He became interested in rap after listening to Stony Skunk’s “Ragga Muffin,” which he described as “unlike anything he had ever heard before.” He decided to become a rapper after hearing Epik High.

By the age of 13, he was writing music lyrics and learning about MIDI. By the age of 17, he had a part-time job at a recording studio. He started composing and arranging music, rapping, and performing shortly after. Before being signed, he was an underground rapper known as Gloss. In 2010, he was a member of the hip hop crew D-Town and produced “518-062,” a song commemorating the Gwangju Uprising.

He purchased a US$3 million luxury apartment in South Korea in 2018, and he currently resides in Hannam-dong, Seoul, South Korea. In March 2019, he enrolled at Hanyang Cyber University for the Master of Business Administration program in Advertising and Media, alongside bandmates RM and J-Hope.

Career:

Suga initially joined Big Hit Entertainment as a music producer and instructed for three years alongside members J-Hope and RM. On Mnet’s M Countdown, he made his debut as a member of BTS with the song “No More Dream,” from their debut single album 2 Cool 4 Skool. He produced and wrote lyrics for several tracks on all of BTS’s albums.

Suga released a solo intro named “Intro: The Most Beautiful Moment in Life” for BTS’ third Korean-language extended play (EP) The Most Beautiful Moment in Life. The lyrics of the rap song discussed the anxieties of reaching adulthood at the end of one’s adolescent years. It was released on April 17, 2015, with an animated music video. The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Pt. 2’s follow-up EP, The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Pt. 2, spotlighted another intro performed by Suga, called “Intro: Never Mind,” which specifically recounted Suga’s adolescent years.

The song was released on November 15, 2015, and served as the opening track for BTS’ 2016 compilation album The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever. Suga did not perform another introductory track for BTS until 2020 when he released “Interlude: Shadow” as part of the Map of the Soul: 7 album release. The interlude is a rap song that references “Intro: O!RUL8,2?” from the 2013 EP of the same name and explains BTS’ fame, comparing it to the celebrity O!RUL8,2? hoped for.

The song was released on January 10, along with a music video that also referred to the difficulties of celebrities. Billboard’s Tamar Herman presented it as an “evocative, yet brash track,” stated how the song’s sound modifies midway through to show “this dichotomy between how popularity and audiences watching him affects his idea of self.”
