Ted Lerner was born in Washington, D.C., on October 15, 1925, to Mayer and Ethel Lerner. Ted has a younger brother, Lawrence, and a younger sister, Esther. Ted and his siblings were born in an Orthodox Jewish household while their parents were devout Jews.
Ted attended Raymond Elementary School for his early schooling. Following that, he attended McFarland Junior High. Finally, in 1944, he received his high school diploma from Roosevelt. His education after leaving the army and enrolled at George Washington University under the GI Bill. He first earned an Associate of Arts degree.
He enrolled in George Washington University Law School, where he earned his LLB in 1949. He used to sell houses on the weekends when he was in law school to help fund his widowed mother and two younger siblings. His curiosity in real estate was piqued as a result of this incident.
Ted Lerner married Annette. They have three daughters and nine grandchildren.
Ted Lerner decided to practice law after graduating from law school. He was chosen by the court to defend a parking attendant accused of robbing cars that he was expected to park in his first lawsuit. The parking attendant was originally given two-year probation, but Ted was able to have it reduced to six months. Ted, on the other hand, received no remuneration for it because his client wanted to flee town without paying him.
Ted wanted to start a full-time real estate company after being frustrated with the incident. It was 1952, and he was 25 years old and married at the time. His wife Annett, who served as a secretary in the State Department, gave him a loan of $250, and he used it to start Lerner Enterprise, a real estate business.
He had a particularly difficult first year. From the second year onwards, however, conditions started to change. He knew a home builder who had 400 completed homes that he couldn’t sell. Ted was able to sell both of them in a brief amount of time. He not only profited handsomely from them, but his company grew as a result of word of mouth.
Ted was promoted to Chief Executive Officer, and Lawrence was no longer involved with the business. He remained a shareholder, however, and was entitled to a dividend from the company. Ted was also given permission to use Lerner Enterprise’s capital to finance his other endeavors. Ted became the supreme controlling authority of the business he established with his wife’s money as a result of this.
The Lerner family established the ‘Annette M. and Theodore N. Lerner Family Foundation,’ which supports a variety of charities including ‘Food and Friends,’ ‘The Hebrew University of Jerusalem,’ ‘Shady Grove Adventist Hospital,’ and others.
