He is tied for first on the PGA Tour in wins and second in men’s major championships, and he shot a 48 on the Navy course. He was featured in Golf Digest and on ABC’s That’s Incredible! when he was five years old.  Tiger won the Under Age 10 section of the Drive, Pitch, and Putt competition at the Navy Golf Course in Cypress, California, before turning seven. Woods first broke 70 on a regulation golf course when he was 12 years old. Woods competed in his first major national junior tournament, the 1989 Big I, when he was 13 years old. He was paired in the final round with pro-John Daly, who was relatively unknown at the time. The format of the event assigned a professional to each group of qualified juniors. Daly birdied three of the final four holes to win by one stroke over Woods. When Woods was a teenager, he first met Jack Nicklaus at the Bel-Air Country Club in Los Angeles, where Nicklaus was giving a clinic to the club’s members.

Woods was a part of the show, and he wowed Nicklaus and the audience with his abilities and potential. “I’m done,” Woods later told friends. On April 20, Woods announced that he had undergone his fourth back surgery since 2014 to relieve back and leg pain. Recovery time could take up to six months, which meant Woods would be out of the game for the rest of the year. He finished tied for ninth place after shooting rounds of 69-68-75-68. His world ranking rose from 1,199th to 668th, the largest jump in his career.


He then tied for sixth place with a score of five-under-par at the 2018 Open Championship. Woods finished second at the 2018 PGA Championship, two shots behind winner Brooks Koepka. It was his best major finish since 2009 (second at the 2009 PGA Championship), and he moved up to 26th in the world rankings. His final round of 64 was his best in a major.  On September 23, 2018, Woods won the season-ending Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club for the second time and the tournament for the third time in his PGA Tour career. He won by two strokes over Billy Horschel.

 

Woods was 15 years old and a student at Anaheim’s Western High School when he became the youngest U.S.  He was named Southern California Amateur Player of the Year for the second year in a row in 1991, as well as Golf Digest Junior Amateur Player of the Year. Woods’ career was marked by comebacks from personal problems and injuries over the next decade. From December 2009 to early April 2010, he took a self-imposed break from professional golf in order to work out marital issues with his then-wife, Elin. Several women claimed extramarital affairs with Woods, and the couple eventually divorced. Woods dropped to 58th in the world rankings in November 2011 before regaining the top spot between March 2013 and May 2014. Woods played in only one tournament, and he dropped out of the top 1,000 golfers in the world.  Woods made steady progress to the top of the game after returning to regular competition, winning his first tournament in five years at the Tour Championship after a slow start to the year, Woods suffered an injury during the final round of the Honda Classic and was unable to complete the tournament.  He went on to compete in the WGC-Cadillac Championship but was clearly in pain for much of the final round.

He was forced to miss the Arnold Palmer Invitational at the end of March 2014, and after undergoing back surgery, he announced on April 1 that he would miss the Masters for the first time since 1994. Woods returned to the Quicken Loans National in June, but he stated that his expectations for the week were low. He’d struggle in nearly every aspect of his game and miss the cut. He then competed in The Open Championship, which was held at Hoylake and won by Woods eight years before. Woods shot a brilliant 69 in the first round to put himself in contention, but shot 77 on Friday and finished 69th.


Despite his back pain, he competed in the 2014 PGA Championship, where he failed to make the cut. On August 25, 2014, Woods and his swing coach, Sean Foley, parted ways. Woods withdrew from the Farmers Insurance Open on February 5, 2015, due to another back injury.  Woods stated on his website that it was unrelated to his previous surgery and that he would take a break from golf until his back healed. He returned for the Masters, finishing in a tie for 17th place. Woods suffered a wrist injury in the final round after his club collided with a tree root.
