Thomas E. Love (born October 1937) is an American businessman who is worth a billion dollars. Love’s Travel Stops & Country Stores is his company, and he is the owner, founder, and executive chairman.
He was the youngest of six children and the son of F. C. Love, a lawyer who went on to become the president of the oil corporation Kerr-McGee and Margaret Eugenia Vessels Love. Thomas E. Love was born in Oklahoma City in October 1937, the youngest of six children and the youngest of six siblings. A talented football player at St. Gregory’s High School in Shawnee, he left home at the age of 13 to attend school as a boarder and complete his education.
Love attended St. John’s University in St. Cloud, Minnesota, but dropped out after less than a semester and moved to Los Angeles instead. He subsequently joined the United States Marine Corps, where he advanced through the ranks over the course of a three-year career to the rank of corporal. When he was discharged from the Marine Corps, he married and chose to return to college for a second time. In 1964, he dropped out of the University of Oklahoma to pursue other interests.
In the beginning, Love operated restaurants and car washes until he saw a business potential in abandoned petrol stations, which he capitalized on. Love and his wife Judy leased a self-service gas station in Watonga, Oklahoma, in January 1964, and the business was successful. Love went on to establish another 30 petrol stations in the following years. His decision to mix self-service petrol stations with convenience shops in 1971 resulted in the company’s continuous expansion and expansion. Love’s Travel Stops & Country Stores is now a nationwide business with more than 500 stores in 40 states, according to the company.
On December 26, 1961, Tom and Judy Love exchanged wedding vows. They have four children and reside in the city of Oklahoma City, in the United States. Love expanded his business by opening an additional 40 gas stations across Oklahoma and neighboring states. Love’s Travel Stop opened its doors on Interstate 40 in Amarillo, Texas, in 1981, marking the company’s first location in the United States. According to Love’s, the company has more than 360 travel stop and convenience store sites across 40 states as of 2015. Love’s is listed No. 14 on the Forbes 2015 America’s Largest Private Companies list of the nation’s largest private companies.
Mr. Love has been active in both state and national activities, having served as a member of the board of trustees of St. Gregory University, president of the National Oil Jobbers Council, and chairman of the Oklahoma Transportation Commission. Aside from that, he has served as chairman of the Oklahoma Business Roundtable and is now a member of the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum’s board of directors.
Mr. Love has earned several awards and recognitions, including the “Corporation of the Year” award in 1991 and the President’s Awards for Service to God and Country in 1996, among others. He has been inducted into the Sales and Marketing Executives Internal Academy of Achievement as well as the Oklahoma Commerce and Industry Hall of Honor, among other honors. Additional recognition includes being named Oklahoma’s Most Admired CEO in his profession in 2010 and receiving the Annual Trust Guardian of Transportation Award in 2014. Mr. Love has also been named Oklahoma’s Most Admired CEO in his area in 2010.
