According to him, his father is “distant, messed-up, and not around.” Later on, Odenkirk would state that he grew up in “Hating” Naperville because it “felt like a dead end, like Nowheresville,” according to the author. Bill Odenkirk, Odenkirk’s younger brother, is a comedian and writer. At the age of 16, Odenkirk graduated from Naperville North High School. He had “become bored of high school,” and because he had earned enough credits, he was allowed to leave while still a junior. Given his age and fear of being socially uncomfortable at any college, he chose to attend the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, rather than a more prestigious institution.

After a year, he transferred to Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and then to Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois, where he “honed his sketch-writing and performance skills with live shows on both colleges radio stations.” After a year, he graduated and went on to study at Marquette University. He began his comic writing career as a radio DJ for WIDB, the local non-broadcast campus station at Southern Illinois University.

At WIDB, he established The Prime Time Special, a late-night radio comedy show that ran from midnight to 4 a.m. on weekdays. Greg Weindorf and Matt Helser, two additional rising stars, were his co-stars on the project. Having completed three years of education, Odenkirk found himself three credits short of graduation when he decided to try his hand at writing and improv in Chicago.

He completed his courses at Columbia College Chicago and graduated from Southern Illinois University in 1984 with a bachelor’s degree. After initially studying with Del Close, Odenkirk attended the Players Workshop, where he met Robert Smigel.

The two formed a friendship that would last for years and eventually lead to Odenkirk’s appearance on Saturday Night Live. He also appeared at the Improv Olympic, where he shared the stage with prominent comedians Chris Farley and Tim Meadows. When Odenkirk was fourteen years old, he paid a visit to Chicago’s Second City Theater.
