Vijay Rupani is an Indian politician who belongs to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He is currently the chief minister of Gujarat. He represents Rajkot West Assembly constituency in Gujarat’s state legislative assembly.
Vijay Rupani Biography:
Vijay Rupani was born on 2 August 1956 to Mayaben and Ramniklal Rupani, in a Jain Bania family. He was the seventh and youngest son of the couple. His family moved to Rajkot in 1960 due to political instability in Burma. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Dharmendrasinhji Arts College and LLB from Saurashtra University.
Business Career:
Vijay Rupani is a partner of the business firm Rasiklal & Sons, founded by his father. He had worked as a stockbroker.
Political Career:
He began his political career as a student activist. He joined Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and eventually the Jan Sangh in 1971. He has been with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) since its inception. He is the only minister in Gujarat’s current cabinet to have been arrested during the emergency era. He has served as the party’s corporate in Rajkot. He has also served as the mayor and a member of Rajya Sabha.
He was the chairman of the manifesto committee during the term of former Gujarat chief minister Keshubhai Patel. He served as the general secretary of BJP’s Gujarat unit and chairman of the Gujarat Finance Board during Narendra Modi’s tenure as Gujarat’s chief minister. He was nominated by the BJP to contest the Rajkot West Assembly seat after the resignation of Vajubhai Vala.
He won the bypoll by a convincing margin and got elected as an MLA for the first time in 2014. He was the state minister for transport, labor, and employment, water supply before getting appointed as the chief minister of Gujarat on 5 August 2016. After assembly elections held in December, he won his constituency with major votes and became the CM of the state for the second time.
Controversies:
In 2011, the Vijay Rupani HUF entity sold approximately 35000 shares in Sarang Chemicals in a single transaction purchased in 2009 at approximately 63000 shares, resulting in a loss. SEBI, the regulator, had charged 22 entities, including Vijay Rupani HUF, with pumping and dump handling. In November 2017, SEBI issued an ex parte order imposing a penalty of 1500000 on Vijay Rupani HUF for creating a misleading appearance in the stocks.
His HUF said the penalty had been imposed without giving the opportunity to be heard. The SEBI stated that the entity had not filed a response to its show-cause notification in time. Later, the Securities Appellate Tribunal set aside the penalty order and asked SEBI to issue a fresh order and to hear all the parties involved.
