National Basketball Association’s Eastern Conference-bound Toronto Raptors are a Canadian basketball team headquartered in Toronto (NBA). As of right now, the Raptors have won one conference championship and one NBA title (both 2019).
The Toronto Raptors and Vancouver Grizzlies were both added to the NBA in 1995 as expansion teams. For the first time in NBA history, there were two franchises headquartered outside of the United States. (The Toronto Huskies participated in the Basketball Association of America, a precursor to the NBA, in 1946–47.) There were three seasons that the Toronto Raptors failed to advance from the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings.
In a draft-day deal in 1998, the Raptors got their first big-name talent in the form of guard-forward Vince Carter. The Toronto Raptors returned to the postseason in 2000-01, reaching the conference semifinals before falling to the eventual conference champion Philadelphia 76ers in a heartbreaking seven-game series.
It was the trade of Carter in 2004 that stopped Toronto’s four-year losing streak, which began with a successful season in 2001–02 but finished with a first-round playoff exit.
However, Chris Bosh-led Toronto Raptors were eliminated in the first round of both the 2006–07 and 2007–08 playoffs, and their record since then has not been good enough to warrant a playoff appearance. The team’s rebuilding strategy was slowed down by the departure of Bosh in 2010.
The squad had a remarkable turnaround in 2013–14, going from last place in the division to winning the second division title in the team’s history. DeMar DeRozan was part of a transaction that sent Kawhi Leonard to the San Antonio Spurs in return for DeRozan, and the Raptors were hoping that this would be the year they finally broke through. Due to the fact that Leonard had only one year left on his contract and had been feuding with the Spurs for most of last season, this move was seen as risky.
Toronto won their first conference championship in franchise history in 2018–19 thanks in large part to Leonard and Lowry’s smooth partnership. Basketball programmes for students younger than the age of eighteen can be found in a wide variety of institutions, including elementary schools, youth clubs, municipal recreation centres, and churches. This type of “biddy” basketball was invented by Jay Archer of Scranton, Pennsylvania, in 1950 for children ages 11 and under.
The number of players on a team was determined by the number of students in the class and the size of the playing field in the early years. With a gymnasium of between 1,800 and 3,600 square feet (334.5 square metres) in size in 1894, teams began playing with five players on each side. As the playing field grew larger, the number of players per team increased to nine. Since then, the number of players has remained unchanged, with the exception of a brief period in 1895 when the number was set at five by agreement.
Naismith and five of his original players were Canadian, hence Canada was the first country outside the United States to play basketball. When the sport was first brought to France in 1893, it quickly spread to England in 1894, Australia in 1895, China and India in 1896, and Japan by 1900.
As a result of the reduced number of players, gyms that once housed classes of 50 or 60 people were now occupied by just 10 to 18 people. This led to the outlawing of the game by a number of organisations within five years. Due to the game’s exclusion, many YMCA members opted out of their memberships and instead rented out halls to play the sport, paving the route for its eventual professionalisation.
