Valentino Rossi was born on February 16, 1979. Rossi is widely regarded as one of the best motorcycle racers of all time, having won nine Grand Prix World Championships, including seven in the premier class. Rossi started the season on the first row and won the first round in Spain in controversial fashion, colliding with Sete Gibernau’s Gresini Honda on the final lap. He finished second in Portugal before going on to win five straight races, including three pole positions in France, Italy, and Assen, from the Chinese to the Dutch rounds.
In China’s third round, misfortune struck again when he was forced to retire after moving up from thirteenth to fifth and battling for third place with Colin Edwards and John Hopkins. His front fender had been knocked off the motorcycle by a lump of rubber from his front tyre. At the next round in France, things didn’t get any better for him as he scraped the back of Honda rider Dani Pedrosa, leading him to run wide and collide with Randy de Puniet, who then fell from his Kawasaki after striking Sete Gibernau. Rossi overtook Hopkins on the fifth lap and began to pull away from Pedrosa after Hopkins’ Suzuki lost the front end in an off-camber right-hander on lap 10 and retired. Rossi was comfortably in first place with a three-second lead until his Yamaha suffered a mechanical failure on lap 21, forcing him to retire for the second time in as many races. Rossi would finish ninth in the standings at Le Mans, 43 points behind Nicky Hayden.
Rossi’s first win of the year came in the third round of the Spanish Grand Prix. Rossi started fourth, but moved up to third on lap two after passing teammate Lorenzo, and then moved up to second on lap seven. By then, race leader Pedrosa was 1.4 seconds ahead of Rossi, but with eleven laps to go, Rossi had snatched the Honda rider’s rear wheel. When he crossed the line, he made the winning pass at the Nieto corner, gaining 2.7 seconds on Stoner and taking the championship lead by eleven points.
Rossi got off to a good start in the first few races.
