Valentino Rossi was born on February 16, 1979. Rossi is widely regarded as one of the best motorcycle racers of all time, having won nine Grand Prix World Championships, including seven in the premier class. Rossi is also the only road racer who has competed in 400 Grands Prix or more. He has ridden with number 46 for the entirety of his career, including when defending his title. He also owns the Sky Racing Team VR46, which competes in the Moto2 class now and in the Moto3 class in the past.

Rossi won the 500cc World Championship and the 8 Hours of Suzuka with Honda in 2001, the MotoGP World Championships (also with Honda) in 2002 and 2003, and then continued his back-to-back championship record by winning the 2004 and 2005 titles after leaving Honda to join Yamaha. With an accident in the final round in Valencia, he lost the 2006 title. Rossi finished third overall in 2007, before reclaiming the title in 2008 and keeping it in 2009. Rossi left Yamaha for Ducati for the 2011 season after a season hampered by a broken leg and no title defence. Rossi took over for Stoner at Ducati and went on to have two losing seasons with the Italian manufacturer.
Rossi debuted in grand prix motorcycle racing during the 1996 championship season. From his first race in Malaysia through his last race in Italy, he had some success, gaining regular points and occasionally placing barely off the podium, although he retired in both the French and Dutch races. He added to his points total by finishing fifth in the German race, but he retired again in the British round.

Rossi finished second at Imola and eighth in the Valencian Community round, almost missing the podium. He concluded the season well with three more race victories: one in Australia, one in South Africa, and one in Rio de Janeiro, where he battled hard with Olivier Jacque. After that, he finished third in the Argentinian round after taking pole position the day before.

Rossi continued to dominate in 2003 after a solid 2002, despite some resistance from budding Spaniard Sete Gibernau. Rossi won the first round of the season in Japan, although the race was tarnished by the death of Japanese rider Daijiro Kato, who wrecked at the 130R and slammed the barrier at high speed in the Casio Triangle that followed. Rossi finished second in the South African race before winning in Spain, despite dropping to seventh on the first lap.

Rossi finished the season on a high note, winning three straight poles and races in Malaysia, Australia, and Valencia. Because of the peculiar conditions, many observers consider the Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island to be one of Rossi’s best career moments. After receiving a ten-second penalty for passing Marco Melandri under yellow flags due to a crash by Ducati rider Troy Bayliss, front-runner Rossi pulled away from the rest of the field after learning of the penalty, eventually finishing more than 15 seconds ahead of the rest of the field, overcoming the penalty and winning the race.

Rossi and the Factory Yamaha squad were even more dominant in 2005 than the previous year. Rossi started the season on the first row and won the first round in Spain in controversial fashion, colliding with Sete Gibernau’s Gresini Honda on the final lap. He finished second in Portugal before going on to win five straight races, including three pole positions in France, Italy, and Assen, from the Chinese to the Dutch rounds.

In China’s third round, misfortune struck again when he was forced to retire after moving up from thirteenth to fifth and battling for third place with Colin Edwards and John Hopkins. His front fender had been knocked off the motorcycle by a lump of rubber from his front tyre. At the next round in France, things didn’t get any better for him as he scraped the back of Honda rider Dani Pedrosa, leading him to run wide and collide with Randy de Puniet, who then fell from his Kawasaki after striking Sete Gibernau. Rossi overtook Hopkins on the fifth lap and began to pull away from Pedrosa after Hopkins’ Suzuki lost the front end in an off-camber right-hander on lap 10 and retired. Rossi was comfortably in first place with a three-second lead until his Yamaha suffered a mechanical failure on lap 21, forcing him to retire for the second time in as many races. Rossi would finish ninth in the standings at Le Mans, 43 points behind Nicky Hayden.

Rossi’s first win of the year came in the third round of the Spanish Grand Prix. Rossi started fourth, but moved up to third on lap two after passing teammate Lorenzo, and then moved up to second on lap seven. By then, race leader Pedrosa was 1.4 seconds ahead of Rossi, but with eleven laps to go, Rossi had snatched the Honda rider’s rear wheel. When he crossed the line, he made the winning pass at the Nieto corner, gaining 2.7 seconds on Stoner and taking the championship lead by eleven points.

Rossi got off to a good start in the first few races. He won the first race of the season in Qatar after early leader Casey Stoner crashed out, finished third in Spain despite a shoulder injury sustained in a motocross accident two weeks prior – the race was won by his teammate Jorge Lorenzo after a last-lap pass at the Dry Sack corner on Honda’s Dani Pedrosa – and a pole-podium in the form of a second place in France where Loren Loren Loren Loren Loren Loren Loren Loren Rossi’s injury was first overlooked and was supposed to recover in a few weeks, but things did not go as planned, and the ligament tear in his shoulder did not heal properly.
