It took me a number of years because it was quite painful, to be completely honest with you. Every time I went to it, I’d start a draught, and it started to seem a bit too realistic. Suddenly, I had the need to do something that anybody can do — whether they’re chatting to a group of friends or performing onstage – I’m going to make this hilarious and I’m going to shift the attention away from the situation. In the meanwhile, I’ll divert my attention somewhere or do anything else to relieve the pressure since I don’t want to remember what happened.”

“My heart was beating at a hundred miles per hour… Brady recorded the tune in front of a live audience at New York City’s Jazz at Lincoln Center. “It’s really the first time that people will be hearing this piece of Wayne, this struggle of Wayne, that some people know and other people don’t,” Brady said of the music.

I’m attempting to make a little dent in the universe because there is someone who may sit down and recognize Wayne Brady from Whose Line Is It Anyway? Those who have seen Let’s Make a Deal or said things like ‘I liked him on that comedy or I adored him on this’ are unaware of the narrative of agony that lies under the surface because I do not share it. As a result, I’ve come to share it with you in order to let you know that you may have a distorted view of what Black is or isn’t.”

Brady narrates his Black experience on Angriest Black Man in America, starting with a lighter-skinned Black person, Tessa Grady, stating to him when he was a child: “You’s a Black, ugly mother(expletive).” Brady goes on to remark that his mother was “a Black, ugly mother(expletive).”

With each verse of the moving, eight-minute song, the performer continues to break down his life’s experiences, touching on topics such as his hair and his reluctance to play outside in the sun because he didn’t want to become darker, as well as being referred to as “one of the good ones” by white people.

Close told the Associated Press that she was “very affected” by what Wayne Brady had written. “It was really unexpected.” Brady was asked to contribute to two additional songs on her album, which was produced by Grammy-winning jazz musician and Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra member Ted Nash. Brady performed on two more tracks on the record.

“I felt tears in my eyes after reading Brady’s original article,” Nash stated after finishing it. There were multiple reasons why I was crying. First and foremost, I was moved by his willingness to share this with us and to enable us to include him in the process. He went on to claim that after a performance one of his band members, who is Black, “came up to Wayne after we finished and said, ‘Look, I have to just tell you that you just expressed exactly what I have been feeling for so long about how I feel about myself.'”
