On June 2, 1972, in Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, England, Wentworth Earl Miller III was born to Wentworth Earl Miller II, a lawyer and teacher, and his wife Joy Marie, a special education teacher. Leigh and Gillian are his two sisters.
From a young age, he was drawn to performing and appeared in a number of school performances. However, as a child, he was apprehensive about pursuing an acting profession.
He acquired his early schooling at Brooklyn’s ‘Midwood High School,’ where he was a member of the annual musical performance ‘SING!,’ which was created by ‘Midwood.’ He graduated from Pennsylvania’s ‘Quaker Valley High School’ in 1990.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in English literature from the prestigious ‘Princeton University’ in 1995. He was a member of the collegiate a cappella group “Princeton Tigertones” while in college. He travelled to Los Angeles in 1995 to pursue a profession in acting and began his career as a lowly assistant for a production firm.
He began auditioning for numerous roles in films and television while working at the production company. He originally appeared in an episode of ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ in 1998.
In the short-lived Fox sitcom “Time of Your Life,” he had a recurring part (1999-2000). He had a cameo appearance in an episode of the NBC series “ER” in 2000. Later, in the short film ‘Room 302,’ he played a waiter (2001).
In the ABC miniseries “Dinotopia” (2002), he played the sensitive and introverted “David Scott,” which was his first lead role.
In 2003, he received a significant break when he was hired in the film “The Human Stain” as the younger version of Anthony Hopkins’ character.
He also had a small role in the 2003 film “Underworld.” He subsequently took a sabbatical to reflect on his life and profession, and in 2004 he did not feature in any production.
In 2005, he made a comeback by appearing in Mariah Carey’s “We Belong Together” music video. He also appeared in a few of episodes of the CBS drama series “Joan of Arcadia” that same year. In the big-budget picture “Stealth,” he also voiced “EDI,” the onboard computer of a runaway aerial combat plane.
Miller got the role of ‘Michael Scofield’ in Fox’s ‘Prison Break’ in 2005. He portrayed a structural engineer who devises a strategy for an escape in the series. For his portrayal, he garnered a lot of praise, and the show was hailed for its tension. ‘Prison Break’ lasted four seasons, ending in 2009.
He has appeared in various films since 2009, including ‘Resident Evil: Afterlife’ (2010) and ‘The Loft’ (2014). He also wrote the screenplays for the thriller ‘Stoker’ from 2013 and the horror film ‘The Disappointments Room’ from 2016.
