Yeduguri Sandinti Jagan Mohan Reddy, better known as Y. S. Jagan or Jagan, is an Indian businessman and politician who has served as the 17th and current Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh since May 30, 2019. He was born on December 21, 1972, and his full name is Yeduguri Sandinti Jagan Mohan Reddy. He established the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) in India and now serves as the party’s president. In addition to this, he is the son of the previous Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy.

Jagan Mohan Reddy began his political career by joining the Indian National Congress. In 2009, he was elected as the Member of Parliament for the constituency of Kadapa. Following the tragic loss of his father in a helicopter accident in 2009, he embarked on an Odarpu Yatra (also known as a consolation tour) throughout the state. After some time, he finally left the Congress Party and founded his political organization, the YSR Congress Party, an appellation that is also shared with his father’s organization.

In the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections in 2014, the YSRCP gained 67 seats, leading to his appointment as the Leader of the Opposition. Five years later, in the 2019 Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections, he led the party to a landslide victory in the state elections, gaining 151 seats out of 175 assembly districts. This triumph had never been witnessed before in the history of the state elections.

In 2001, Reddy made its first acquisition of Sandur Power Company Limited (SPCL), a failed power plant, from the original promoter of the venture, M B Ghorpade. Later on, SPCL was able to acquire other firms as a result of its investment of crores of dollars in other enterprises. Y. S. Bharathi, his wife, is in charge of it. As Reddy’s involvement in politics increased, he sold his stakes in SPCL and distanced himself from his actively running direct enterprises.

Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, better known as YSR, was Reddy’s father. He served as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh twice, the first time from 2004 to 2009 and the second time from 2009 to 2014. During the elections in the Kadapa district in 2004, he began his career in politics by campaigning for the Indian National Congress. In 2009, he won the election to represent the Kadapa Lok Sabha seat in the House of Representatives.

After his father passed away in September 2009, he immediately began making preparations to carry on the political legacy that his father had left behind. Even though he had the support of the vast majority of MPs, party leaders Sonia and Rahul Gandhi did not endorse his selection for the position of chief minister. As promised, he started an odarpu yatra (condolence trip) six months after his father died. The purpose of this journey was to travel and visit the families of individuals believed to have either committed suicide or experienced lousy health due to hearing the news of his father’s death.

He disobeyed an order from the high command of the Congress party, resulting in a rift between him and the party’s central leadership. The order instructed him to call off his odarpu yatra. He continued with the yatra despite claiming it was a personal problem on multiple occasions. As a result of his conflict with the top leadership of the Congress party, on November 29, 2010, he tendered his resignation from the Kadapa Lok Sabha seat and left the party. His mother, Vijayamma, has also deserted the party and resigned from her position as a representative for the Pulivendula Assembly seat.

On the 7th of December 2010, he announced to Pulivendula that he would be beginning a new party within the next 45 days. It was stated in March 2011 that he would be launching the new party, which would be called the YSR Congress Party in Jaggampeta, which is located in the East Godavari region. After that, his party participated in the by-elections held in the Kadapa district and gained an overwhelming majority of the seats there.

As president of the YSR Congress, Reddy competed in a by-election held in the Kadapa seat and emerged victorious by a significant margin, receiving 545,043 votes. His mother defeated Y. S. Vivekananda Reddy in the election for the Pulivendula Assembly seat and won by a margin of 85,193 votes. On May 27, 2012, agents from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) detained Reddy on suspicion of stealing money from an organization.

Reddy was called in for questioning by the CBI because of allegations that he amassed enormous wealth via unethical methods by utilizing his father’s office, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, when he served as chief minister. CBI and ED have also issued summonses to 58 entities that have reportedly invested in Reddy’s enterprises in exchange for favors they allegedly obtained in mining licenses and project allotments.

The YSR Congress Party and Reddy’s family have been claiming that there is a political plot behind the investigations that Reddy is conducting. In protest of the United Progressive Alliance’s decision to support establishing a Telangana state apart from Andhra Pradesh, Reddy began a hunger strike. At the same time, he was being held in custody. His blood sugar levels and blood pressure dropped after he went on an indefinite hunger strike for 125 hours. He was sent there to get treatment after being transferred there.

Vijayamma, his mother, participated in the hunger strike to voice her Opposition to the creation of Telangana. After being set free, Reddy called for a bandh to last three days to oppose Telangana’s establishment. In response to the decision to favor Telangana’s establishment, Reddy and his mother he was resigned from their respective legislatures. In 2014, most political experts and psephologists considered the YSR Congress Party a pre-poll favorite.

However, the YSRCP was unsuccessful in the elections held in 2014, gaining just 67 of the 175 seats available in the state parliament and receiving 45% of the vote share. The vote percentage of the Telugu Desam Party increased to 47%, which resulted in the YSRCP losing the election by a margin of 2%.On November 6, 2017, in Idupulapaya in the Kadapa district, Reddy commenced his 3,000-kilometer-long Praja Sankalpa Yatra walkathon. This event is more often referred to as padayatra. Reddy is the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly and the president of the YSR Congress Party.

The YSR Congress party came up with the slogan “Raavali Jagan, Kaavali Jagan” (which may be translated as “Jagan should arrive. We want Jagan.) about his foot march that spanned 125 Assembly segments over the whole of the state over 430 days and came to a close on January 9, 2019. On October 25, 2018, at the VIP Lounge of the Visakhapatnam Airport, Reddy was assaulted with a cock fighting knife as he was about to board an aircraft bound for Hyderabad. He suffered a lacerated injury to his shoulder, which resulted in the need of his undergoing surgery.

Andhra Pradesh went to the polls for both national and state elections in April, and May of 2019, and the YSR Congress Party emerged victorious in an overwhelming majority in those contests, taking 151 of the state’s total 175 assembly seats and 22 of the state’s 25 Lok Sabha seats. On May 30th, 2019, he took the oath of office as Chief Minister. As chief minister, he implemented several social welfare programs, including Jagananna Amma Vodi and Navaratnalu.

The Jagananna Amma Vodi program offers monetary support to mothers and guardians living Below the Poverty Line so that they may pay for their children’s education. Navaratnalu is a collection of nine welfare programs that address various demographics, including farmers, women, medical and health, education, and Special Category Status. He canceled the plans for a new capital to be built at Amaravati, which had been planned by the previous government of the TDP and instead suggested three different means for the judicial, administrative, and legislative branches of government in the cities of Kurnool, Amaravati, and Visakhapatnam, respectively.

The initiative was met with solid Opposition from the agricultural community in Amaravati. In a decision handed down in March 2022, the Andhra Pradesh High Court ruled that the government “lacked the competence to make any legislation for shifting, bifurcating, or trifurcating the capital.” As a result of this finding, the Andhra Pradesh High Court ordered the government of Andhra Pradesh to continue constructing Amaravati.

The Andhra Pradesh chief minister, Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, said on Wednesday that the state’s public schools’ gross enrollment ratio (GER) had reached a new high of 100.8 percent. He says the gross enrollment ratio climbed to this value from 84.48 percent in 2018-19. The national average is lower than this value, coming in at 100.13 percent. This growth is due to the government’s attention on improving education infrastructure and implementing reforms in the industry.

As a result of the transformative welfare measures made available to students over the last four years, the enrollment rate in public educational institutions has dramatically grown. The Chief Minister stated at the town of Kurupam, located in Parvathipuram Manyam’s district. “This results from our government’s significance to the education sector.”
