Carol Vorderman was born on 24 December 1960 in the Bedfordshire town of Bedford. Anton ‘Tony’ Vorderman, a Dutch father, and Edwina Jean, a Welsh mother, are his parents’ names. Vorderman’s parents divorced three weeks after she was born, and her mother relocated the family to Prestatyn, Denbighshire, North Wales, where she and her siblings, Anton and Trixie, grew up in a one-parent household.
Vorderman attended Blessed Edward Jones Catholic High School in Rhyl, Flintshire, where he received a complete education. She went to Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, to study engineering when she was 17 years old. Vorderman was one of the youngest ladies ever admitted to Cambridge at the time. She graduated with a third-class degree, which she regarded as “disappointing.” She is a member of the Nines Club, having completed each year of study with a third-class grade.
Vorderman did not discover her Dutch ancestors until 2007. Her father had been a part of the Dutch resistance during the Nazi occupation, but she didn’t realise it until then. He passed away as the show was being taped. Adolphe Vorderman, her great-grandfather, was instrumental in the discovery of vitamins.
She married Christopher Mather, a Royal Navy officer, for the first time when she was 24 years old in 1985, however, the marriage barely lasted a year. In 1990, at the age of 29, she married management consultant Patrick King. Vorderman and King had two daughters, Katie and Cameron, before splitting up in 2000.
Vorderman and Des Kelly met at a Christmas party in 1999 and began living together in London in 2001, as well as utilising their second home in Glandore, West Cork, Ireland. Vorderman and Kelly divorced in December 2006 after five years of marriage, officially declaring their amicable split in January 2007 then reconciling briefly in Bristol, according to sources.

During the years 1984–85, she was a regular guest on Radio Aire’s Peter Levy program, when she would arrive in the middle of the morning to tell a tale to pre-school children.
Vorderman worked part-time in the UK Atomic Energy Authority’s Information Services Department in the mid-1980s, mostly in the creation of in-house television programs.
In 2008, Vorderman quit the show. Vorderman began presenting other series for other networks while starring on Countdown, including ITV’s Better Homes and The Pride of Britain Awards, as well as guest hosting series. From 2011 until 2014, Vorderman was a host on ITV’s Loose Women.
