Olly Murs was born on 14 May 1984 in Witham, Essex, England. Murs is the son of Vicky-Lynn and Pete. Ben Murs, his twin brother, and Fay Murs, his sister, are his siblings. Edward and Kathe Murs, his great grandparents, were Latvian immigrants. He went to Witham’s Howbridge Junior School and Braintree’s Notley High School, where he was a striker for the football team.

Between 2006 and 2008, Murs played semi-professionally for Witham Town in the Isthmian Division One North. During the 2006/07 season, he was a standout for the club’s reserve squad, scoring 12 goals in 13 games and won the Ridgeons Reserve Teams Cup. The next season, he made three first-team appearances and scored once, but an injury caused him to retire from the sport.

Prior to appearing on The X Factor, Murs worked as a recruitment consultant at Prime Appointments in Witham and played with a buddy, Jon Goodey, in a covers band called the Small Town Blaggers.

In 2007, he also featured on the game program Deal or No Deal, when he earned a meagre £10 prize. In 2012, Murs returned for a celebrity edition of the competition, making him the only competitor to compete in the competition twice. In 2008, he travelled to Australia and spent three months travelling around the Gold Coast. Following his return, he chose to re-audition for The X Factor, having already tried out unsuccessfully twice.

Murs was said to be recording the first album almost soon after finishing second to Joe McElderry in the final. Murs confirmed in February 2010 that he had signed a combined record deal with Epic Records and Syco Music, following the rumours.

Murs began working with John Shanks and Eg White, according to reports. Later, it was revealed that Roy Stride, Trevor Horn, Wayne Hector, and Matty Benbrook would be included on the album, with whom he worked to create the “greatest possible music.” More writers and producers, including Phil Thornalley, Martin Brammer, Samuel Preston, Mark Taylor, Chris Difford, and Professor Green, were revealed to be working with Murs in the studio; however, the duet fell through before recording was completed.

Murs’ debut single, “Please Don’t Let Me Go,” was published in 2010 and reached number one on the UK Singles Charts, earning him a Gold certification from the BPI. After “You Are Not Alone” alongside the other Series 6 finalists, it was Murs’ first number-one single. “Thinking of Me,” his second single from his first album, reached the top of the UK Singles Charts and was certified Silver by the BPI. His second number-one hit was “Heart Skips a Beat.” “Dance with Me Tonight,” Murs’ second song from his upcoming album, achieved his fourth number one hit.

Murs’ self-titled debut album, Olly Murs, was released in November 2010 and debuted at number two on the UK Albums Chart, with the highest week one album sales for a debut album in 2010, with over 108,000 copies sold.

The album was certified double platinum by the BPI after selling over 600,000 copies. Murs’ second album, In Case You Didn’t Know, was released in November 2011 and debuted at number one on the charts, with two number-one singles.

Murs has sold over 10 million albums globally as of December 2014. Murs confirmed his comeback to The X Factor in May 2011 to co-host the spin-off program The Xtra Factor alongside Caroline Flack. Happy Days, his autobiography, was released in October 2012. Murs released his third album, Right Place Right Time, in November 2012, and six singles from it, the first of which, “Troublemaker,” became his fourth number one.

Murs’ single “Wrapped Up,” featuring Travie McCoy of Gym Class Heroes, was released on November 16, 2014, and reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100. This was the first single off his new album Never Been Better, which debuted at number one on September 24, 2014, and was quickly followed by a second single, “Up,” starring American singer Demi Lovato, which reached the top four.

Murs also confirmed a spring 2015 tour in the United Kingdom. Murs released his fourth song, “Beautiful to Me,” on June 15th, with Game of Thrones actress Charlotte Hope starring in the music video. Murs and Flack will replace Dermot O’Leary as co-hosts of The X Factor from Series 12 onwards, it was announced on April 16, 2015.
