One year later, he became the team’s quarterback and threw his first touchdown pass from a great distance. His high school baseball team included him as a pitcher who could throw fastballs at 94 miles per hour. In basketball, he led his high school team to the state championship playoffs.

Despite collecting the majority of his high school accolades in baseball, Kaepernick insisted on playing college football. He attended the University of Nevada in Reno and played football for the Nevada Wolf Pack. He was drafted by the ‘San Francisco 49ers as their backup quarterback. By his senior year, he was 6′ 5″ tall but weighed only 170 pounds, which was a contributing factor. Even Nevada, the only university to offer him a football scholarship, was cautious out of concern that he might eventually turn to baseball.

He was listed on the website of Major League Baseball as a draftable talent from the 2006 class. As a junior in college in 2009, the Chicago Cubs selected him in the 43rd round of the Major League Baseball Draft, but he opted to continue playing football at Nevada. In 11 games as a rookie, he threw 19 touchdown passes, three interceptions, 2,175 yards, and a passing efficiency rating of 150.8.

He also disclosed to the media that he had received death threats.

The following season, despite the 49ers’ 8–8 record, Kaepernick set career highs with 3,369 passing yards and 669 rushing yards. Harbaugh departed the 49ers after the 2014 season. He was replaced by Blaine Gabbert in the starting lineup midway through the 2015 season and ultimately suffered a season-ending shoulder injury.

Kaepernick began his protests during the 2016 NFL preseason, originally by sitting during the national anthem and later by kneeling.  At that moment, Kaepernick declared, “This problem transcends football for me.” Eric Reid, a coworker, joined him on his knees shortly thereafter. NFL players and athletes from other sports began to replicate their actions as the 2016 season progressed.

The demonstrations made national headlines and elicited fervent responses from both supporters and opponents. In response to the incident, President Barack Obama commended Kaepernick’s “constitutional freedom to make a point.” In a September television appearance, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump attacked the players for their “lack of respect” for the United States and urged them to leave the country. Reports indicate that Kaepernick received death threats. On October 3, Time placed a kneeling Colin Kaepernick on its cover and gave him credit for starting a national debate “about privilege, pride, and patriotism.”
