De Forest born to Swedish father and Danish mother in Randers, Denmark, earned several years of singing and conducting when she joined the Steve Cameron Gospel Choir. Aged fourteen, she had met Fraser Neill – a Danish resident since the mid-1990s – at a festival in Ajstrup and the couple spent the coming five years playing tiny venues, selling approximately one hundred copies of Emmelie de Forest & Fraser Neill, a self-pressed CD.

While the duo moved to Copenhagen in 2012, they stopped playing together in order to give de Forest more time to study at the Complete Vocal Institute in town. In January 2013 she participated in the Grand Prix de Dansk Melodi, a contest that finished with a Danish entry to the finals of the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö, Sweden.
