Alicia Christian Foster is an American actress, director and producer, and is widely known as Jodie Foster. Since her mother was a film producer, she started her Hollywood career at the tender age of three. Initially she appeared in TV commercials, sporadic episodes of television series and TV films. Being fluent in French and living for many years in France only helped Foster to make her mark in French films and French music by singing. She was in several Disney films until she was a teenager and her transfer into the film career was a difficult task as she hadn’t made commercial success in her first films as a non-child artist. However, everything changed when ‘The accused’ and ‘The silence of the lambs’ were released and their performance was critically acknowledged and honoured. Foster is not only a brilliant actor, but an experimental director who has produced films of different genres. She was awarded the Women in Film Crystal Award for her impeccable contribution to the world of cinema as a woman.
Jodie Foster was born to Evelyn Ella and Lucius Fisher Foster III in California. Her dad was a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force who later became a real estate broker. Her father left her mother before Foster was born.
Foster and her three siblings, who was a film producer, were brought up by her mother alone. She attended Lycee Francais de Los Angeles and made leisure visits to France before joining Yale University for literature. At the age of three, Foster began her film career. She performed in a TV commercial as a ‘Coppertone girl and made a TV debut in 1968, in the Mayberry R.F.D episode.

Foster appeared as a child artist in many Disney movies such as ‘One Little Indian (1973)’ and ‘Napoleon and Samantha (1972).’ She also continued to work with the Disney films in her teens.
As a young woman, she performed as a singer on the French pop music circuit. And in 1977 she made her musical debut in France. Her French film Moi, fleur bleue’ used songs she sang as soundtracks.
She played films such as Taxi Driver, Bugsy Malone and Freaky Friday in 1976. Foster has won prizes for all these films such as the British Academy Film Award and Golden Globe Award nomination.
Foster’s films as an adult artist have been panned commercially and critically. She made the breakthrough in her career in 1988 with the release of ‘The Accused.’
In 1991, with ‘The Silence of the Lambs’ she gave her first blockbuster, starring Anthony Hopkins in the opposite direction. For her brilliant performance in the cinema she received the Academy Award, the Golden Globe Award and the BAFTA Award.
In the same year, Foster debuted with ‘Little Man Tate.’ Her management skills were highly applauded and her production company Egg Pictures began in Los Angeles in 1992.
In the early nineties she starred in creative enterprises like ‘Shadows and Fog’ by Woody Allen, ‘Sommersby’ in the American Civil War, ‘Maverick (1994)’ in the Western comedy film, and ‘Nell (1994)’ in which she received the Screen Actors’ Guild Award.
In 1995, Foster again experimented with guidance and directed ‘Home for the holiday.’ In the following year she was honoured with the Crystal Award from Women in Film for her excellent film contribution.
For the first time in 1997, Foster acted in the science fiction film ‘Contact’ in front of Matthew McConaughey. The following year an asteroid was named ‘17744 Jodiefoster.’
