Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa are members of the South Korean girl group Blackpink, which was founded by YG Entertainment. The group made their debut in August 2016 with the single album Square One, which included the singles “Whistle” and “Boombayah,” which went to number one on the Gaon Digital List in South Korea and the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart in the United States, respectively.

After creating its first major female group, 2NE1, in 2009, YG Entertainment launched auditions throughout the world seeking preteen and adolescent recruits to develop a new girl group. According to the members, joining the label as trainees was like enrolling in a full-time pop-star academy, with Jennie comparing it to “more rigorous than school” and Rosé comparing it to “The X Factor with dorm dorms.”

With their hit single “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” (2018), Blackpink became the first female Korean act to earn a certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), and their music video is now the most-viewed by a Korean group on YouTube. They have the most top 40 hits in the United Kingdom among all Korean artists, and their 2018 single “Kiss and Make Up,” a duet with Dua Lipa, was the first by a Korean group to achieve a BPI certification and an Australian Recording Industry Association platinum certification (ARIA).

On October 2, 2020, Blackpink released their debut Korean studio album, The Album, featuring “Lovesick Girls” as the third and lead single. Blackpink made an appearance on Youtube’s new original music programme prior to the exclusive video premiere of their music video for “Lovesick Girls.” As the group’s first featured artist, it was released with “unfiltered access” moments.

On the Billboard 200 and the UK Album Charts, the album reached number two, making Blackpink the highest-charting Korean female act on both charts. With The Album, Blackpink became the first K-pop girl group to sell a million copies in less than a month after its debut, selling around 1.2 million copies. On October 21, Blackpink performed “Lovesick Girls” on Good Morning America and Jimmy Kimmel Live! in the US.

Blackpink: Light Up the Sky, the group’s first documentary film, debuted on Netflix on October 14, 2020, and covers the four years since the group’s inception in 2016. The documentary featured videos from their early days in the band, as well as peeks into their personal lives, behind-the-scenes anecdotes and interviews with the members, and glimpses into the production of The Album.

Blackpink topped Bloomberg’s Pop Star Power Ranking for the month of October, becoming the first Korean artist to do so since the ranking’s debut in April of that year, thanks to the popularity of The Album and the group’s Netflix documentary.

Blackpink announced on December 2 that they will be collaborating with YouTube Music for their debut Livestream concert. The live event, called “The Show,” was originally slated for December 27, 2020, but was delayed to January 31, 2021, owing to new COVID-19 pandemic rules implemented in South Korea.

Several songs from The Album, as well as Rosé’s song “Gone” from her debut solo single album R, were performed for the first time at the concert. More than 280,000 individuals bought a subscription to see the program, according to later reports.

Universal Music Japan stated on June 2, 2021, that a Japanese version of The Album will be released on August 3, 2021. Four of the eight tracks – “How You Like That,” “Pretty Savage,” “Lovesick Girls,” and “You Never Know” – had Japanese versions, and the album was available in 12 distinct physical editions.
