How to Meet E Sreedharan Personally and Face to Face

Elattuvalapil Sreedharan is an Indian engineer who is credited with changing the face of public transportation in India through his leadership in the construction of the Konkan Railway and the Delhi Metro while serving as the managing director of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) from 1995 to 2012.

Sreedharan worked as a civil engineering instructor at the Government Polytechnic in Kozhikode and as an apprentice at the Bombay Port Trust for a year. Following that, he joined the Indian Railway Service of Engineers (IRSE) after passing the UPSC’s Indian Engineering Services Exam in 1953. In December 1954, he was sent to the Southern Railway as a Probationary Assistant Engineer.

A hurricane washed away portions of the Pamban Bridge, which connected Rameswaram to mainland Tamil Nadu, in December 1964. The Railways set a six-month deadline for the bridge to be restored, but Sreedharan’s supervisor, who oversaw the project, cut it to three months. Sreedharan was assigned to the execution and was able to rebuild the bridge in just 46 days. In appreciation of this performance, he received the Railway Minister’s Award.

He was assigned to the execution, planning, and design of the Calcutta metro, India’s first metro, as deputy chief engineer in 1970. Sreedharan not only finished this much-anticipated project, but he also set the groundwork for India’s contemporary infrastructure engineering. In 1975, he was relieved of his duties.

Sreedharan arrived to the Cochin Shipyard in October 1979 during a period of low production. The MV Rani Padmini, the company’s first ship, had been delayed for a long time. When Sreedharan took over as chairman and managing director, he turned the shipyard’s fortunes around and ensured that its first ship was completed (CMD). The shipyard’s first ship, the MV Rani Padmini, was launched in 1981 under Sreedharan’s supervision.

He spoke on numerous political topics before entering politics. He backed Narendra Modi for Prime Minister ahead of the 2014 Indian general election, praising him for his fast decision-making as Gujarat’s Chief Minister. When the Aam Aadmi Party administration in Delhi declared that only women would be granted free passage on buses and Metro trains, he objected and wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting his “personal involvement.”

Sreedharan joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on February 18, 2021, in preparation for the 2021 Kerala Legislative Assembly election. He ran for the Kerala Legislative Assembly in 2021 from the Palakkad assembly constituency and lost to Shafi Parambil of the Indian National Congress, despite giving the incumbent MLA a tough battle.
