Oprah Winfrey (born January 29, 1954 in Kosciusko, Mississippi, United States), is an American television personality, actress, and entrepreneur. She is best known for her syndicated daily talk show, which was one of the genre’s most popular. She rose to prominence as one of the wealthiest and most powerful women in the United States.

At the age of six, Winfrey went to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to live with her mother. She was sent to Nashville in her early adolescence to live with her father, who proved to be a beneficial influence in her life. At the age of 19, Winfrey accepted a position as a news anchor for a local CBS television station. She was hired as a reporter and coanchor for the ABC news affiliate in Baltimore, Maryland, following her graduation from Tennessee State University in 1976. She found herself confined by the neutrality demanded of news reporting and joined the Baltimore morning show People Are Talking in 1977 as a cohost.

Winfrey succeeded at the relaxed and personal talk-show format, and in 1984 she relocated to Chicago to take over the floundering AM Chicago. The programme immediately became a success due to Winfrey’s candid and engaging attitude, and in 1985 it was renamed The Oprah Winfrey Show. In 1986, the programme was widely syndicated and quickly became the highest-rated television talk show in the United States, earning multiple Emmy Awards.

Winfrey made her film debut in 1985, starring in Steven Spielberg’s adaption of Alice Walker’s 1982 novel The Color Purple. Her critically acclaimed performance landed her other opportunities, most notably in the television miniseries The Women of Brewster Place (1989). Winfrey founded Harpo Productions, Inc., a television production firm, in 1986, and Harpo Films, a film production company, in 1990. The firms began purchasing film rights to literary masterpieces, including Connie May Fowler’s Before Women Had Wings, which starred and was produced by Winfrey, and Toni Morrison’s Beloved, which starred Winfrey as well.

Later in her career, Winfrey provided her voice to a number of animated films, including Charlotte’s Web (2006) and The Princess and the Frog (2009), as well as appearing in Lee Daniels’ The Butler (2013). Selma (2014), an Oscar-nominated film about Martin Luther King Jr. that Winfrey produced and acted in, was nominated for best picture. She then acted in the HBO television film The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks (2017) as the daughter of a woman whose diseased cells were used in research that resulted in significant scientific discoveries, unbeknownst to her and her family. Winfrey next starred as Mrs. Which in Madeleine L’Engle’s classic 1962 science fiction novel A Wrinkle in Time’s 2018 cinematic version.

In 1996, Winfrey pioneered the concept of an on-air book club. She released selections two to four weeks in advance and then held a discussion with a small number of individuals on her show. Each book chosen soon soared to the top of the best-seller lists, and Winfrey had a huge impact on the publishing business.

Winfrey expanded her publishing influence further with the hugely successful 2000 debut of O, the Oprah Magazine and 2004 launch of O at Home. The latter discontinued publication in 2008, and O, the Oprah Magazine ceased print publication in 2020, after which it was rebranded. Oprah Daily was introduced as a digital offering, and O Quarterly, a four-times-a-year print publication, was established.

In 1998, Winfrey expanded her media entertainment empire by cofounding Oxygen Media, a cable television network devoted exclusively to women. On satellite radio, the Oprah & Friends station started in 2006. In 2008, she negotiated a deal with Discovery Communications that resulted in the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) taking over the Discovery Health Channel in January 2011. Winfrey declared in 2009 that her television chat show will conclude in 2011 and that she would concentrate on OWN. The Oprah Winfrey Show concluded its run in May 2011, and Oprah’s Next Chapter, a weekly prime-time interview show on OWN, premiered in January 2012. Discovery stated in 2017 that it will acquire a controlling stake in OWN, but Winfrey would continue connected with the channel.

That same year, she was named a special correspondent for CBS’s newsmagazine 60 Minutes. Winfrey signed a deal with Apple TV+ in 2018 and began producing and presenting the streaming conversation show Oprah Talks COVID-19 in 2020. Additionally, she organised a two-part panel discussion on OWN titled Where Do We Go From Here? to address the huge anti-racism movement that erupted following the videotaped police shooting of George Floyd, an unarmed African American man in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Oprah made headlines in 2021 for her honest interview with Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, the couple’s first since they ceased to be working members of the British royal family. The much-anticipated television special aired on CBS.

Winfrey was involved in a variety of philanthropic endeavours, including the establishment of Oprah’s Angel Network, which funds charity causes worldwide. In 2007, she founded a $40 million school in South Africa for impoverished girls. She became a vocal opponent of child abuse, receiving numerous honours and prizes from civic, humanitarian, and entertainment organisations. In 2010, she was named a Kennedy Center honoree, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presented her with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award the following year.

Winfrey received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013. She received the Cecil B. DeMille Award (a Golden Globe for lifetime achievement) in 2018, and her emotional speech advocating for racial and gender equality was widely regarded as one of the ceremony’s most memorable moments.

Winfrey is the author of multiple self-help books, most recently The Path Made Clear: Discovering Your Life’s Direction and Purpose (2019) and What Happened to You? : Conversations on Trauma, Resilience, and Healing (2019). (2021; written with Bruce D. Perry).
