J Mercykutty Amma is an Indian politician who serves as Kerala’s Minister for Fisheries, Harbour Engineering, and the Cashew Industry Fisheries University. She is a member of the Kundara constituency in the Kerala town of Kollam.


Mercykutty, J. Amma was born on September 30, 1955, in Munrothuruth, to Jainamma and Francis. She holds a master’s degree in Malayalam and has completed the LLB curriculum. She is married to Sri B. Thulaseedhara Kurup, the President of the Kollam district’s Centre of Indian Trade Unions.

After a long career in left-wing politics that began as a student activist, Mercykutty Amma took her seat. In 1974, she joined the Students Federation of India (SFI) as an activist. At Fatima Matha National College in Kollam and Sree Narayana College in Kollam, she served as an SFI office bearer. Up until 1985, she was the SFI State Vice President and All India Vice President.

She served in the CITU and the Communist Party of India in various capacities (Marxist). Up until 2012, Smt. Mercykutty Amma was the District Committee President of the Matsyathozhilali (Fishermen) Federation in Kollam, and from 1987 to 2005, she was the State Vice President. She was also the President of the Khadi Workers Federation and the District Treasurer of the Coir Workers Union in Kollam from 1989 to 1989. She has served as the Chairperson of the Kerala State Cooperative Federation for Fisheries Development Ltd. (Matsyafed). Now, Vice President, Kerala Cashew Workers Centre; All India Vice President and State Secretary, CITU; Member, CPI (M) State Committee.


In 1987, she was elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly for the first time (26 March 1987 – 17 June 1991). In 1996, she was re-elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly (20 May 1996–13 May 2001). Mercykutty Amma was re-elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly for the third time in 2016, and was named Minister in charge of the Fisheries, Harbour Engineering, and Cashew Industry portfolios.
