Javed Akhtar is a poet, lyricist, and playwright from India who writes in Urdu and Hindi (Hindustani). In the late 1970s and early 1980s, when Salim Khan was one-half of the script-writing partnership billed as Salim-Javed, he produced some of his most commercially successful works. Javed was the other half. Akhtar is still well-known in the Bollywood community and is a highly sought-after lyricist. Akhtar was born in what is now the city of Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh. After finishing his secondary school education, Akhtar enrolled in Saifiya College in Bhopal and eventually received a Bachelor of Arts. In college, he was a fierce competitor in debate and a repeat Rotary Club Prize winner. On October 4, 1964, Akhtar landed in the city of Mumbai. In the early years of his time spent in Mumbai, he was able to compose the dialogue for a low-budget film and earn Rs. 100 for his efforts. He used to fill in for someone else as an assistant on occasion.
His father, Jan Nisar Akhtar, was equally well-known for his poetry in the Urdu language. The name is Javed was derived from the phrase “Lamba, Lamba kisi jadoo ka fascina hoga” in a poem Javed’s father wrote. Javed’s original name was Jadoo. He was given the name Javed as his legal name since it was the name that came the closest to the term Jadoo. The film director Farhan Akhtar is the son of Javed Akhtar, a film director. The father-and-son team of Javed and Farhan Akhtar has collaborated on several films, including Dil Chahta Hai, Lakhshya, and Rock On, amongst others.
