Jeff Lynne is a well-known English songwriter, singer, musician, and record producer. He acquired an early interest in music, dropping out of high school at the age of 15 to establish his first band, ‘Rockin’ Hellcats.’ He then joined the band ‘The Chads’ when he was 17 and ‘The Nightriders’ (later ‘Idle Race’) when he was 19.
He published his first album with the ‘Idle Race’ at the age of 21, followed by another the following year. However, due to their financial failure, he joined the British rock band ‘The Move’ and released two albums under that banner. He co-founded Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) at the age of 23, quickly rose to prominence as its primary songwriter and producer, and released a number of chart-topping albums under the ELO brand.
By the time ELO broke up in 1986, he had established a reputation as a songwriter and producer. He has spent the majority of his later years producing albums and writing songs for famous artists, with ‘The Beatles Anthology’ being one of his best efforts during this time period. Additionally, he resurrected ELO and released a number of albums.
Jeff Lynne was born on 30 December 1947 in Birmingham’s Pype Hayes neighbourhood. His father, Phillip Porter Lynne, was a foreman in the Birmingham City Council’s Roads Department. Nancy Lynne nee Osborne, his mother, worked for ATV Television. He was the brother of one and the sister of two.
Jeff is a musician at heart. He gained an early interest in it while listening to his grandparents, both of whom were performing musicians, and inherited their talent. His parents may have taken him to see ‘The High and the Mighty,’ an American disaster film, in 1954. Its soundtrack, composed by Dimitri Tiomkin, made a lasting impression on young Jeff, igniting a lifetime obsession.
When Jeff was nine years old, his family relocated to 368 Shard End Crescent, a council house. He spent the remainder of his youth in Birmingham, speaking with a Brummie accent, attending Alderlea Boys’ Secondary School, and cheering for Birmingham Football Club.
He first heard Roy Orbison’s ‘Only the Lonely’ on the radio at the age of 13 and fell in love with rock music, becoming a devoted admirer. He eventually developed an appreciation for Del Shannon, but originally overlooked the Beatles. He thought their song ‘Love Me Do’ was particularly repulsive.
When he heard ‘Please Please Me,’ his opinion of the Beatles shifted. Inspire by the song, he requested a guitar from his father. Eventually, his father bought him one for £2, and he quickly developed into an amazing guitarist by practising day and night on it.
His next source of inspiration was a concert he attended. His father took him to a Del Shannon concert at Birmingham Town Hall when he was still a high school student. He was so taken aback that he resolved to found his own band and dedicate his life to music. Jeff Lynne, just 15, quit school in 1963 to establish his first band with Robert Reader and David Walsh. His mother, who desired that he become a cameraman, made numerous attempts to discourage him, but he remained adamant in his determination.
Initially known as the ‘Rockin’ Hellcats,’ the group met at Shard End Community Centre and practised primarily on Spanish guitars and inexpensive electronic instruments. Later, they began performing at the centre once a week, initially going by the moniker ‘Handicap’ and then ‘Handicap’.
They began playing additional gigs in and around Birmingham and were soon booked on a weekly basis at the Regal Cinema in Handsworth, where they performed in between Saturday matinee film screens. When Robert and David quit the group in 1964, Jeff continued to administer it, recruiting replacements.
Jeff departed ‘Handicap’ at the end of 1964 to join a local band called ‘The Chads’. He purchased his first piece of studio recording equipment, a stereo reel-to-reel tape recorder, in 1965.
In 1966, he quit ‘The Chads’ to become the lead guitarist for ‘The Nightriders’ (later renamed ‘The Idle Race’). He immediately rose to prominence as the group’s principal songwriter.
Jeff produced the group’s second album, ‘Idle Race,’ in November 1969. The album received widespread critical acclaim but once again failed to chart. By that time, Roy Wood had formed ‘The Move,’ and Jeff joined the new group in February 1970, disillusioned by repeated failures.
‘The Move’ released ‘Looking On’ in December 1970, the group’s third album and the first to feature Lynne. However, by that time, Lynne, Wood, and Bev Bevan had formed a new band, Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), and had begun work on their self-titled debut album, ‘The Electric Light Orchestra.’
They released Move’s fourth album, ‘Message from the Country,’ in June 1971 solely to meet contractual obligations. They released ELO’s debut album, ‘The Electric Light Orchestra’, six months later, on 1 December 1971. Wood quit ELO in July 1972, leaving Lynne as the group’s primary songwriter and producer. Meanwhile, they began recording their second album, ‘Electric Light Orchestra II’, in May 1972. Lynne wrote all but two of the album’s tracks.
‘ELO 2’ debuted in the UK’s Top 40 albums in January 1973. They followed that up with the November/December release of their third album, ‘On the Third Day.’ While both of these albums garnered critical acclaim, Lynne’s father declared that his work lacked melody. Lynne was moved by his father’s criticism to embark on a new endeavor, a concept album titled ‘Eldorado,’ in which he wrote about a man who escapes his mundane reality by traveling to a dream place. When it was released in September 1974 in the United States, it was immediately certified Gold and Silver in the United Kingdom.
‘Eldorado’ was followed by the equally successful ‘Face the Music’ (September 1975), which featured the band’s first global hit, ‘Evil Woman’. Lynn composed the song in thirty minutes as filler. By early 1976, it had hit the UK and US Top Ten charts. ‘The New World Record,’ ELO’s sixth studio album, was a great success. When it was released in October/November 1976, it sold five million copies worldwide in less than a year, eventually reaching multi-platinum status in both the United States and the United Kingdom. Jeff’s creativity hit a new level on it, and the majority of the tunes came to him quite rapidly.
In 1977, the band released the album ‘Out of the Blue,’ which catapulted them to the top of the charts. The albums ‘Discovery’ (1979), ‘Time’ (1981), ‘Secret Message’ (1983), and ‘Balance of Power’ (1984) followed (1986). Simultaneously, he wrote songs for known artists, including Dave Edmunds’ ‘Slipping Away.
ELO performed a number of times across Europe in 1986, with the final concert taking place in Stuttgart, Germany on 13 July 1986. Following that, the ELO disbanded. By then, his reputation as a musician and producer had extended widely, and he had been invited to contribute to a number of films.
Jeff Lynne was asked to co-produce George Harrison’s comeback album, ‘Cloud Nine, in late 1986. While they were working on it, Harrison suggested that the two of them create a band. Lynne and Harrison co-produced the album, which was a huge hit and earned Lynne and Harrison a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year in 1989. Lynne returned to production work following his years with the Wilburys, producing ‘Into the Great Wide Open for the American rock band ‘Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. However, his crowning achievement during this era was ‘The Beatles Anthology,’ a three-volume collection of double albums.
He began work in February 1994 and completed ‘Free as a Bird’ in March. John Lennon recorded the song in 1977. By 1996, the entire work had been completed, with the publishing of ‘Anthology 3’ in October of that year. Simultaneously, he continued writing songs for well-known musicians.
By 2000, he had resurrected Electric Light Orchestra, purchasing 50% of the band’s name from Bev Bevan and releasing the album ‘Zoom’ under the band’s title in 2001. It was primarily recorded by Lynne but featured guest musicians Ringo Starr and George Harrison.
Lynne began collaborating with Harrison on his final album, ‘Brainwashed’, in 2001.
