John tu (Chinese: ; pinyin: Dù Jchun; Wade–Giles: Tu Chi-ch’uan; born 1940) is a Chinese-born American entrepreneur and philanthropist who was born in the United States to Chinese parents. Kingston Technology was founded with him as a co-founder.
John Tu was born in the Chinese city of Chongqing and raised on the island of Taiwan. He received his electrical engineering degree from Technische Hochschule Darmstadt in Germany before relocating to the state of California.
Camintonn, which he co-founded with David Sun in 1982, is a software development company. They sold the company for $6 million in 1986 and went on to form Kingston Technology. For $1.5 billion in 1996, they sold an 80 percent stake in the firm to Softbank, which they later purchased back for $450 million in 1999.

Prior to establishing Kingston Technology, John Tu worked as a shipbuilder in Germany, where he met his future wife. In 1970, he immigrated to the United States, where he founded a gift store before going on to work as a developer for a real estate company in Scottdale.
When Tu met David Sun in Los Angeles in 1982, he formed a partnership with him to develop the memory device manufacturer Camintonn Corporation. A little over four years later, they sold the firm to AST Research for a cool $6 million dollars. They had lost all of their funds in the Black Monday stock market meltdown in 1987, only a few months before establishing Kingston Technology.
Tu and Sun sold their 80 percent ownership in the tightly held firm to Softbank for $1.4 billion in 1996 and dispersed $100 million of the earnings to their workers as a result of the transaction.
John Tu was born on August 12, 1941, in Chongqing, China, to John Tu and his family. He graduated from Darmstadt University with a degree in electrical engineering in his last year of study.
