KN Nehru is agitated. He has already made three phone calls to his guest, who was scheduled to meet him for lunch at 1 p.m. in his office in Thillai Nagar, Trichy. When the guest arrives at 1.10 p.m., Nehru quickly transforms from restless to consummate host. Nehru explains to his guest over a sumptuous vegetarian spread packed from his home that, while his family was strictly vegetarian, he used to eat meat frequently. “Since the death of thambi (younger brother), I have observed vratham (fasting),” he informs his guest. “I haven’t eaten meat in four years.”

Nehru, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s strongman in Trichy and the eldest of seven siblings, is still mourning the death of his brother KN Ramajeyam, who was assassinated in 2012 while out for a morning walk in Thillai Nagar. The case has not been solved yet, which causes Nehru great personal grief. Nehru was inconsolable and reclusive for nearly a year following Ramajeyam’s murder. He is now back on his feet, trotting with his signature clipped trot, as acolytes sprint to keep up with him.

Nehru was the firstborn son of Narayanasamy Reddiar, a prosperous Telugu-speaking farmer, and his second wife Dhanalakshmiamma, who lived in Kanakiliyanur village near Lalgudi town, about 40 kilometres from the bustling city of Trichy in central Tamil Nadu.

Narayanasamy was a powerful zamindar, with hundreds of acres of paddy, plantain, and coconut plantations in and around Lalgudi. Until the late 1960s, he was also a proud Congressman, naming his eldest son Nehru and his daughter Gandhi. He gave an intriguing name to a nephew, Jananayagam (democracy).
