An Indian political activist, Kanhaiya Kumar has held the positions of president of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union and leader of the All India Students Federation (AISF). He is also a member of the Indian National Congress. He had a position on the Communist Party of India’s National Executive Council throughout his time there. On September 28, 2021, he became a member of the Indian National Congress.
Having been born in January 1987, Kanhaiya Kumar spent his childhood in the hamlet of Bihat, which is located in the Begusarai district of Bihar, close to Barauni. A cultural organization with a left-leaning ideology that dates back to the time of India’s independence fight, the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA) was responsible for organizing several plays and events that Kumar participated in while he was still in school.
During the year 2002, he achieved a first division on the board examinations for Class X. Following his graduation from high school, Kumar enrolled in the Ram Ratan Singh College located in Mokama, where he studied science throughout his eleventh and twelfth grades. The next year, in 2007, he received a “first-class” degree in geography from the College of Commerce, Arts and Science in Patna, where he had previously completed his studies. Around the time when Kumar was attending Patna College of Commerce, he started becoming interested in student politics.
He became a member of the AISF, and a year later, he was named a delegate to attend the AISF’s conference in Patna. Following the completion of his postgraduate studies at Nalanda Open University in Patna, where he earned a Master of Arts degree in sociology and once again received a first-class grade, he relocated to Delhi. In 2011, he joined Jawaharlal Nehru University, where he pursued a Doctor of Philosophy degree in African studies at the School of International Studies.
The Process of Decolonization and Social Transformation in South Africa, 1994–2015 was the title of his dissertation, which he finished by the end of February 2019. Kumar assumed the role of president of the JNU students’ union in September 2015, where he was representing the AISF.In an interview that took place in March 2016, Kumar claimed, “Bhagat Singh was the first person who inspired me to become involved in politics.” After there, the route proceeded to Birsa Munda and Jyotirao Phule, as well as to Ambedkar, Gandhi, and Marx.

After suffering a defeat at the hands of Giriraj Singh of the Bharatiya Janata Party by a margin of 422,217 votes, he found himself in a distant second place. “I didn’t have anything directly to lose in these elections,” he said in an interview with Aaj Tak, reflecting on his loss.
According to the allegations of sedition, Kanhaiya Kumar was taken into custody by the Delhi Police in February 2016, after an incident that took place on the campus of JNU. The event was organized by students at JNU to mark the second anniversary of the execution of Afzal Guru, who was convicted of perpetrating an assault on Parliament. Kumar denied that he had yelled any slogans that were detrimental to the integrity of the nation.
The arrest of Kumar elicited strong responses from members of the opposition parties, educators, students, and scholarly groups. As a form of protest over his arrest, students at JNU went on strike. The Delhi High Court granted Kumar interim release for six months on March 2, 2016, on the condition that he make a commitment that he would not “participate in any anti-national activity.”There were no recordings of Kumar using anti-national chants, according to Justice Pratibha Rani, who made this observation. The Delhi Government commissioned a separate magisterial probe, which concluded that it could not discover any proof that Kumar had participated in anti-national chanting.
Since Kumar’s release from prison, he has been the target of death threats. As a prize, a leader of the youth wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) promised ₹5 lakh to anybody who could chop off Kumar’s tongue. The city of New Delhi displayed posters that offered a reward of ₹11 lakh to anybody who committed the act of killing Kumar. Kanhaiya Kumar delivered a lecture on March 3, 2016, to a crowded auditorium on the campus of JNU. During his address, he said that he was not seeking independence from India by any means, but rather freedom within India.
He made a plea to his fellow students, urging them to liberate the country from the control of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, which, according to him, was attempting to split the nation. When referring to the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, he referred to them as his “opposition” rather than his adversary. He asked those who supported him to continue shouting the chants of Azadi, which means freedom. Not only did the speech get praise from the leaders of non-BJP parties, but it also received praise from independent observers.
According to Shashi Tharoor, it was the BJP that was responsible for making Kumar a “nationwide political star,” and he expressed his gratitude to the party for bringing about this phenomenon. The fact that his speech did not address “the graveness of alleged anti-national slogans” screamed at JNU and what he did to stop them was another source of worry for several individuals at the time. During his speech on the occasion of International Women’s Day, which took place on March 8, 2016, Kumar referred to the rape of Kashmiri women that had been done by members of the Indian Army.
The Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) expressed their contention that this was “anti-national” in nature. The BJYM has filed a complaint against Kumar and Nivedita Menon, a lecturer at JNU, stating that they have made remarks that are “anti-national.” The civil court in Patna received a complaint against Kumar, alleging that he had committed acts of sedition and slander. The administration at JNU issued a punishment to Kumar in October 2015 for “misbehaving” with a female student and “threatening” her. This information was disclosed on March 10, 2016, and it was discovered that the fine was issued.
According to the allegations, Kumar had been urinating in the open throughout June 2015. He then reportedly grew hostile and threatened the female student who did not agree with his conduct. The AISF issued a statement claiming that the lawsuit was an effort to smear Kumar’s reputation. Someone who accused Kumar of being a deshdrohi (which translates to “traitor to the nation”) assaulted and insulted him on the campus of JNU on March 10, 2016. It was two days after Kumar had delivered a lecture on International Women’s Day, during which he accused security forces of raping women in Kashmir.
