Luis Guzmán is a Puerto Rican actor who has been in many films. The actor has managed to carve out a niche for himself in the profession over the course of a lengthy and illustrious career that has mostly consisted of character parts. Despite the fact that he was originally uninterested in acting, he eventually took up the trade as a pastime and eventually became a successful street theatre performer. Luis’s life was forever altered when an old acquaintance of his approached him about auditioning for a television series. The concept eventually culminated in the film ‘Miami Vice,’ in which Luis had a prominent part.

This prepared the way for him to break into the mainstream sector. Despite the fact that he spent a considerable portion of his early career playing gangsters, sidekicks, and police officers, Luis was able to obtain a few lead roles and jobs with a comparatively longer screen presence later in his career. Luis’s sombre countenance, in addition to his acting abilities, helps him stand out even when he only has little parts to perform. He gained the attention of film filmmakers Steven Soderbergh and Paul Thomas Anderson as he grew closer to the mainstream business.

These two directors would subsequently play an important part in the development of Luis’s career. Luis mostly featured in television programmes throughout his early years. During his early years, he also performed a variety of roles. In later years, however, the actor rose to notoriety in the film industry, appearing in a variety of genre films, including a few of romantic comedies, as the decade proceeded. Luis has received a number of honours and accolades for his outstanding contributions to the business. In addition to performing, the actor has dabbled in the world of film production as a hobby.

In 1956, Luis was born to Rosa, a hospital worker in Cayey, Puerto Rico, and was the youngest of three children. Benjamin Cardona, his stepfather, was employed as a television repairman. Living in Greenwich Village and the neighbouring Lower East Side district of New York City, Luis grew up among the arts community.

The next year, Luis started working as a youth counsellor at the ‘Henry Street Settlement House,’ which is a socio-cultural institution on the Lower East Side, where he remained until his graduation from City College. In addition, he performed at the ‘Nuyorican Poets Cafe,’ where he often saw Cuban actor and dramatist Miguel Piero, who became a friend. Luis subsequently took a more serious interest in the skill and started engaging in street theatre performances as well. Soon after, he landed his first leading part in a major motion picture.

‘Short Eyes,’ based on the play of the same name by Miguel Piero, was the film that launched Luis’ career as an actor. He played a prisoner in the film and went on to feature in many more films. However, he did not feature in a project until 1983, when he played the somewhat well-known character of ‘Jose’ in the television series ‘Variety.’ In a cameo appearance on the CBS crime thriller ‘The Equalizer,’ Luis made his television debut two years after his college graduation. In the same year, he made an appearance in two episodes of another crime thriller, ‘Miami Vice,’ which aired on AMC.

After multiple minor appearances in television shows and films, Luis’s dedication and perseverance were rewarded when he was cast in the 1997 drama picture ‘Boogie Nights,’ which gained critical acclaim. A nightclub owner called ‘Maurice TT Rodriguez’ was his character in the film, and he and the rest of the actors were awarded the ‘Florida Film Critics Circle Award’ for their efforts. Luis was also nominated for a ‘Screen Actors Guild Award’ along with the rest of the ensemble group.

Luis started his television career in 1998 with the ‘HBO’ drama ‘Oz,’ in which he appeared as ‘Raoul “El Cid” Hernandez’ for a total of 12 episodes. He was nominated for a ‘Independent Spirit Award’ for his performance as ‘Eduardo Roel’ in the 1999 crime thriller ‘The Limey,’ for which he received a nomination for ‘Best Supporting Male Actor.’

Luis featured as ‘Lance’ in the 2002 romantic comedy–drama ‘Punch-Drunk Love,’ for which he was nominated for a ‘Imagen Award’ for ‘Best Supporting Actor.’ He also got a ‘Imagen Award’ for ‘Best Supporting Actress.’ He was nominated for the same award in the ‘Best Actor’ category for his role as ‘Ismael,’ in the 2007 Puerto Rican film ‘Maldeamores,’ which was released under the English title ‘Lovesickness.’

I Kicked Luis Guzman in the Face’ was released in 2008, and it was the first time Luis had been included in a short film. As a result of the narrative being judged to be objectionable to a certain group of people, the film was unfortunately banned in 147 countries worldwide.

Luis landed a big television part in the comedy–drama ‘How to Make It in America,’ in which he played ‘Rene Calderon.’ He appeared in 16 episodes of the show. His portrayal of the comic character won him a ‘NAMIC Visions’ award for his performance. In addition, he has provided the voice for a few films. Aside from his roles in the 2008 family comedy “Beverly Hills Chihuahua,” Luis has also voiced the characters “Angelo” and “Chucho” in the 2013 film “Turbo,” as well as the late professional baseball star Lefty Gomez in the 2014 American animated drama film “Henry & Me.”

He appeared in the film as a hijacker who went by the name of ‘Phil Ramos.’ The role was formerly known as ‘Harold Longman,’ and he had previously been played by ‘Martin Balsam’ in the 1974 film and by ‘Richard Schiff’ in the 1998 film.

In between working in films and television shows, Luis made a few cameo appearances in music videos. He was featured on Bruno Mars’s song “Gorilla” as well as Logic’s song “1-800-273-8255.” In addition, the actor has been in a number of television movies. For example, ‘Quiet Killer,’ “In the Shadow of a Killer,” “Innocent Blood,” “Double Deception,” “The Burning Season” and the films “On Seventh Avenue,” “Pronto,” “Counter Culture,” and “Thin Air” are just a few of the titles.

As an executive producer, he worked on two films: the 2015 comedy ‘Puerto Ricans in Paris,’ which had him in the lead role, and the unreleased action comedy ‘Aztec Warrior,’ which was shot in Mexico and shot in the United States. In the latter, he was cast as the title character.

Luis had a recurring part as ‘Jesse Salander’ in the medical drama ‘Code Black,’ which was shown on CBS. He appeared in 47 episodes, making it the longest run he’s had with a single television series to date. As José Gonzalo Rodrguez Gacha in the ‘Netflix’ television series ‘Narcos,’ he played the drug lord and commander of the notorious ‘Medelln Cartel,’ who collaborated with popular drug lord Pablo Escobar to run the Medelln Cartel. Pablo’s life was the inspiration for the television series. The first season of the show included the introduction of Luis as a character.

Angelita Galarza-Guzman is his wife, and they have six children: Cemi Guzman, Yoruba Briggs-Guzman, Yemaya Briggs-Guzman, Luna Guzman, Jace O’Flynn Guzman, and Margarita Briggs-Guzman. Luis was a part of the advertising campaign for Senator Bernie Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign in the United States.

The multilingual actor is proficient in more than 70 languages and has a wide range of acting experience. Surprisingly, Spanish is not one of these languages. Luis was approached about becoming a part of the ‘Most Interesting Man in the World’ advertising campaign for the beer brand ‘Dos Equis.’ According to him, he “doesn’t do biopics,” thus he declined the offer.

Luis had also turned down Steven Spielberg’s offer to portray Abraham Lincoln in the film ‘Lincoln’ when the latter contacted him. Instead, he suggested that Daniel Day-Lewis be cast in the part. Luis was the inspiration for the classic ‘Saturday Night Live’ skit for the character ‘Bill Brasky.’ He was also a gifted football player, earning the prestigious ‘Heisman Trophy’ in 1977. Luis hasn’t seen any of his films since they were released in 1982.
