Her victory in the general election of India in 2019 as a candidate for the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) party from Krishnanagar earned her a seat in the Lok Sabha of the Indian Parliament, which she held from 2019 to 2023.

As a result of Moitra’s involvement in the “Cash for Query” corruption scandal and her acceptance of bribes, she was both disqualified and expelled from the Lok Sabha on December 8, 2023. Between the years 2016 and 2019, Moitra stood as a representative for Karimpur in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. During that time, he also held the positions of general secretary and national spokesman for the All India Trade Congress (AITC).

The appointment of Moitra to the position of AITC District President of Krishnanagar (Nadia North) took place on November 13th, 2023. Before joining politics, she worked as an investment banker at its parent company, JPMorgan Chase. Moitra was born on October 12th, 1974 in Labac, which is located in the Cachar district of Assam. His father’s name was Dwipendra Lal Moitra. Her family is of Bengali Hindu Brahmin descent, and she has a sister she shares with her.

During her time in Kolkata, Moitra attended the Gokhale Memorial Girls’ School. The year 1998 saw her graduation from Mount Holyoke College South Hadley in Massachusetts, United States, where she received degrees in economics and mathematics.JPMorgan Chase employed Moitra as an investment banker in both New York City and London as part of his career. To join the political arena in India, she resigned from her post as vice president at JPMorgan Chase in London in 2009.

Following that, she became a member of the Indian Young Congress, which is the young wing of the Indian National Congress party. Within this organization, she joined Rahul Gandhi’s “Aam Admi Ka Sipahi” initiative as one of the trusted hands of the party’s leader. She is a member of parliament for the 17th Lok Sabha, representing the city of Krishnanagar in the state of West Bengal. The TMC party named her as the Goa in-charge on November 13, 2021, with the responsibility of preparing the party to run for the Goa Legislative Assembly election in 2022. Moitra filed a formal complaint with the police on January 10, 2017, alleging that Babul Supriyo, a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party and a Union Minister, had subjected her to “insults to her modesty” while participating in a nationally televised discussion.

A subsequent decision by the Calcutta High Court resulted in the dismissal of the suit.[19] [19] After a few days had passed, Babul Supriyo submitted legal notifications to Moitra and TMC MPs Saugata Roy and Tapas Paul, accusing them of smearing his reputation by claiming that he was implicated in the Rose Valley Ponzi company scheme. A lawsuit for defamation was launched against Moitra by Zee Media in January 2020. The case was filed because Moitra was allegedly making remarks that were detrimental to the channel when addressing reporters.

A Delhi court decided to release her on bail and then proceed with her trial. As a result of her victory in the case, the accusations that were brought against her were dropped. Moitra identified “seven early signs of fascism” on June 26, 2019, stating that they were prevalent in India when Narendra Modi was in power. She said that these signs were apparent. She said that the constitution, which every member of parliament had taken an oath to defend, was in danger.

She dubbed the press “2 paisa” in December 2020, which resulted in the local news media fiercely criticizing her and deciding to boycott her as a result of her criticism. After hearing her statements, her party distanced themselves from them. While speaking in the parliament on February 8, 2021, Moitra made a statement that was critical of the judiciary as well as the present administration. He said, “The sacred cow that was the judiciary is no longer sacred.”

The day that a sitting chief justice of our country was accused of sexual harassment, presided over his trial, vindicated himself, and then proceeded to accept the nomination to the upper house within three months of retirement, complete with Z+ security protection, was the day that it finally ceased being sacrosanct.

There was a commotion in the house as a result of the speech, with members of the party that is now in power describing it as “objectionable” and claiming that it violated the norms of parliament since it identified a person who had “high authority.” The speech was supported by members of the opposition since it was founded on facts that are considered to be issues of public record.

The comments were, in the end, removed from the available data. Nishikant Dubey and PP Chowdhary, both leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), filed a privilege notice against Moitra on February 11, 2021. In the presence of the parliament on April 7, 2022, Moitra stated that the Criminal Procedure (Identification) Bill, 2022 is even more invasive than the surveillance laws that were in place during the colonial era in India.

As Moitra responded to a film poster depicting the goddess Kali smoking a cigarette on July 5, 2022, at the India Today Conclave East, she said, “Kaali, in my opinion, is a goddess who consumes meat and is open to drinking alcohol.” Imagine your goddess whatever you choose; you are free to do so. In some locations, the act of offering whiskey to the gods is considered blasphemy, but in other locations, it is considered a sacred act.

To distance itself from the incident, her party, the All India Trinamool Congress, released a statement that condemned Moitra’s words. The statement said, “Her views expressed on Goddess Kali have been made in her capacity and are not endorsed by the party in any manner or form.”As a consequence of this, the Bengal BJP filed police complaints against Moitra in the city of Kolkata, as well as in five districts of West Bengal and in the city of Bhopal, which is located in the state of Madhya Pradesh.

On October 14, 2023, an attorney for the Supreme Court named Jai Anant Dehadrai filed a complaint with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) saying that Moitra was involved in money laundering and corruption. There was also a copy that was sent to the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, who then referred the subject to the Ethics Committee of the parliament.

Moitra is accused of receiving money and favors from Darshan Hiranandani, the CEO of a competitor conglomerate to Adani Group, to pose parliamentary questions that targeted Adani. Dehadrai makes this accusation. Hiranandani became an approver on October 19, 2023, and in an affidavit, he provided Moitra with access to her account on the website of the Indian Parliament so that he could directly publish questions on her behalf. He also alleged that Moitra had received favors.

In response to these claims, Moitra declared that she is open to any form of investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the parliamentary ethics committee. Moitra said later in October that she had provided Hiranandani with her parliamentary login credentials “for typing questions.” She also acknowledged that she had accepted receiving presents such as lipstick, scarves, and other items, but only as a “personal friend.”

The Parliamentary Ethics Commission made a recommendation to remove her from the Lok Sabha on November 9th, 2023. By the recommendations made in the report of the Parliamentary Committee on Ethics, the Lok Sabha decided on December 8, 2023, to remove Moitra from the privilege of serving as a member of the house. Moitra has filed a petition with the Supreme Court to appeal her expulsion.

After receiving a complaint from the Lokpal on the claims made against Moitra, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is now investigating the matter. In the case that the Lok Sabha Secretariat provides the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) with the report of the Ethics Committee, which grants permission under Section 17A of the Prevention of Corruption Act to investigate accusations against Moitra, the CBI can file a First Information Report (FIR) and proceed with an investigation into the “criminal conduct” of the TMC leader.

According to reports, the Directorate of Estates (DoE) has sent Mahua Moitra, a member of parliament for the Trinamool Congress, with an eviction notice. Moitra was ejected from the Lok Sabha on December 8. The notice of eviction is about the bungalow that had been assigned to her during the time that she served as a member of parliament.
