Mamata Banerjee is an Indian Politician. She is the founder of the All India Trinamool Congress(AITC or TMC). She has been the 8th Chief Minister of West Bengal, India. She is the first woman to hold the position of Chief Minister in the state. On 19 May 2016, she became the only lady CM to win two consecutive terms. The thumping win came at the heels of multiple allegations of corruption at the end of her tenure as the eighth Chief Minister. In 1997, Banerjee detached itself from the Indian National Congress and founded the All India Trinamool Congress, also known as the TMC or the AITMC.
Mamata Banerjee Biography:
Mamata Banerjee was born in Kolkata on 5 January 1955. She belongs to a lower-middle-class Bengali family. Promileswar Banerjee was her father and Smt. Gayatri Devi was her mother. Her father died when she was nine years old. She is not married. She was very interested in painting and poetry. Her hobbies are reading, writing, and listening to music.
She finished her higher secondary education from Deshbandhu Sishu Sikshalay, Kolkata. She completed her B.A. from Jogamaya Devi College. She was very interested in pursuing law and received a degree with it from Jogesh Chandra Choudhary College of Law, Calcutta University in 1982. Later, She received her master’s degree in Islamic History from the University of Calcutta. She received her doctorate(Doctors of Letters) from Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology, Odhisha.
Mamata Banerjee was entering politics at a young age while she was still in school. She entered the Congress (I) Party in the state and served in various positions both within the party and other political parties. Her rise to the political ladder in the 1970s was quick, and she became Secretary-General of the Mahila Congress from 1976 to 1980.
In 1991, Banerjee was appointed Minister of State for Human Resources Development, Youth and Sports Affairs, and Women and Child Development by Prime Minister P. Uh, V. Narasimha Rao. As Sports Minister, she declared that she would resign and protested in a rally at the Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata against the government’s indifference to her plan to develop sports in the country. In 1993, she was released from her portfolios. In April 1996, she reported that the Congress was functioning as a stooge of the CPI-M in West Bengal. She claimed that she was the only voice of reason and wanted a “clean congress.”
