Manik Sarkar is a communist politician from India who has served as the Chief Minister of Tripura since March 1998 and will continue to do so until March 2018. He was born on January 22, 1949. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has elected him to a position on the Politburo. In March of 2008, he took the oath of office necessary to become the head of the Left Front, the coalition government of Tripura. As a result of the assembly elections that took place in 2013, he was elected to the position of chief minister for the fourth time in a row. Between the years 2018 and 2023, he represented the opposition in the Tripura Legislative Assembly as the Leader of the Opposition.

His affidavit for the 2018 election to the Tripura Assembly indicated that, of all of his peers in India, he had the fewest possessions, making him the least wealthy chief minister. Manik Sarkar was born into a family that belonged to the middle class. Both of his parents were employed by the government; his father, Amulya Sarkar, was a tailor, while his mother, Anjali Sarkar, worked for the State and, subsequently, the Provincial government. During his time as a student, Sarkar got involved in a number of student activities. In 1968, when he was 19 years old, he joined the Marxist faction of the Communist Party of India.

During the whole of his time spent studying at MBB College, from where he received his Bachelor of Business Administration degree, he served as a candidate for the Students’ Federation of India. Sarkar engaged himself wholeheartedly in the student fight that was going on at the time during his first year at the institution. This was during the volatile days of the food movement of 1967, which was a campaign against the policies of the Congress administration that was in power in Tripura at the time. His active participation in this large-scale action ultimately prompted him to join the Communist Party.

Because of his early involvement in politics, he went on to serve as both the General Secretary of the MBB College Student Union and the Vice President of the Students’ Federation of India. Both of these positions were awarded to him. In 1972, when he was just 23 years old and just getting started in life, he joined the State Committee of the Marxist Communist Party of India. In 1978, Sarkar was included in the party state secretariat, which marked the completion of a process that began when he was chosen for the CPI (M) State Committee. This was also the year that Tripura saw it’s very first Left Front administration seize power and assume control of the state’s affairs.

In 1980, at the age of 31 years old, he won the election to the Legislative Assembly from the Agartala constituency and took his seat there. This marked the beginning of Manik Sarkar’s tenure as the head of his state. Approximately around the same time, he was promoted to the position of Chief Whip of the CPI (M). His success as a Member of the Legislative Assembly reappeared in 1983 when he was elected to the Assembly from Krishnanagar, Agartala. At the time, he was serving as Speaker of the Assembly. In 1993, when the Left Front government seized power, Sarkar was given the position of State Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Maoist).

1998 was the year that brought Sarkar his greatest success. He joined the Politburo of the CPI (M), which is the most important policy-making and executive body in a Communist party when he was 49 years old. Politburo is the name of this group. During the same year, he was elected to the position of Chief Minister for the Indian state of Tripura. Since that time, he has won the election to the same office four times in a row over a span of twenty years. He is one of the very few people who have held the position of Chief Minister in India for such a significant amount of time.

As a direct consequence of his political party’s loss of the majority in the 2018 elections, he was forced to resign from his position. It has been established that Sarkar will not be running for election in 2023. He said that the reason for his decision was to make room for younger people to take leadership roles. Panchali Bhattacharya, who Sarkar is married to and who worked for the Central Social Welfare Board until she retired in 2011, served as an employee of the board until 2011. He has made the decision to reside in a home that belonged to his great-great-grandfather and is relatively modest in size.

He used to give his whole income from his position as Chief Minister to his party, and in exchange, he was given an allowance of 10,000 (about US$155) every month. According to the education minister for the state of Tripura, Ratan Lal Nath, former chief minister Manik Sarkar legitimately played the role of a whistleblower in the Rs 640 crore PWD fraud probe. This inquiry led to the prosecution of multiple officials, including the previous minister of PWD, Badal Choudhury.

Manik Sarkar, a leader of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) and a former Chief Minister of Tripura, said on Saturday that the results of the Tripura Assembly elections were “unexpected.” He also claimed that the elections had been turned into a “farce.”In an interview with ANI, the former Chief Minister of Tripura said, “It is unexpected because the performance of the government was zero, democracy was attacked, and the electorate’s right to exercise franchise freely was snatched away.”

The voting booths were turned into a mockery, and the Constitution was rendered ineffective. In addition, he said that various reasons assisted the BJP in splitting the vote of those who opposed the BJP. The end outcome is a whole different thing. One thing is very evident, and that is that sixty percent of voters did not choose the BJP. The vote against the BJP was fragmented. A number of occurrences took place. People have begun to speculate about who assisted the BJP in its return to power. It is pretty obvious, but I would like not to identify any of the parties involved.

Manik Sarkar, a senior member of the CPIM Politburo and a former Chief Minister, has the potential to return to electoral politics and compete in the by-election taking place in his hometown of Dhanpur, which is located in the Sepahijala district. Pratima Bhowmick, the Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, won the most recent assembly elections and defeated Kaushik Chanda, who was running for the CPIM. As a result, the seat she represented is now empty.

According to reports, the senior head of the CPIM decided not to run for election, citing his commitment to focus on the organizational side rather than engaging in electoral politics as his reason. “We made that choice at the six-month mark. Before settling on a final course of action in political matters, several considerations are given careful attention. If the party wants him to run for election and believes that having Sarkar as a candidate would increase the party’s chances of victory, then he will accept the party’s choice, a top CPIM leader told EastMojo while demanding their anonymity.

In order to do various organizational tasks for the party over the previous several days, Sarkar had been moving around to various locations inside the Sepahijala area. He went to the regions of the Sonamura subdivision that had been devastated by the fighting. During the course of his visit, Sarkar engaged in conversation with the members of the local legislative assembly, who were among the victims of the post-election violence. Even though the BJP achieved its first administration in 2018 by defeating the Left, it is important to note that Manik Sarkar became successful in the Dhanpur election, and he beat Pratima Bhoumik. It is necessary to state this fact here.

However, before the elections in 2023, he begged the leadership of the party to release him from the responsibilities of electoral politics. Manik Sarkar, a leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPI (M), began his political career as a student and later went on to serve as the Chief Minister of Tripura for a total of twenty years. He won his first assembly by-election in 1980, and in 2018, when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was elected to power in the state for the first time, he became the opposition leader.

Manik Sarkar, a former four-time chief minister who now leads the CPIM, has announced that he would not run in the assembly elections of 2023. Left parties and Congress have come to an agreement over seat sharing in the Tripura parliament, which would result in Left parties contesting 43 seats and Congress contesting 13 seats. The house has 60 members. From 1998 till 2018, the CPI(M) did not provide tickets to any of the four occasions that they won the election for chief minister. According to sources inside the party, Sarkar will be working for the party and will take charge of the campaign across the state.

As many as 24 fresh candidates have been put up by left-leaning parties. Up to eight of the currently serving MLAS were removed from their positions. While Congress will compete for 13 seats, the Communist Party of Iran (CPI), the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP), the Forward Bloc, and the Independents will each compete for one seat. Badal Chowdhury, a six-time MLA, is also removed from office. Sarkar has been running for office from the district of Dhanpur. This seat is going to be contested by Koushik Chanda. In 2013, Congress received a vote share of 45.75 percent and was successful in winning 10 seats; however, in 2018, the grand old party was unable in winning even a single seat.

In 2018, the BJP and its partner, the IPFT, completely routed the Left Front in the state of Tripura. In the Tripura legislature, which has 60 members, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 36 seats, the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) won eight seats, and the CPIM won 16 seats. Manik Sarkar, who served as former chief minister of Tripura, said on Sunday that individuals who are unhappy with the BJP would not necessarily all vote for the CPI(M) in the assembly elections that will take place the next year. Sarkar said that people are upset and furious with the BJP as he was speaking at a session hosted by the women’s branch of the CPI(M).
