Manon Rhéaume is a retired Canadian ice hockey goaltender who was born on February 24, 1972. She was an Olympic silver medallist who set a number of records during her career, including becoming the first woman to play in any of North America’s major pro sports leagues.
Rhéaume signed a contract with the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning in 1992, and he played in preseason exhibition games for the team in 1992 and 1993. She spent five years in professional minor levels, appearing in 24 games for seven different teams. She also represented Canada in ice hockey, winning gold medals at the IIHF Women’s World Championships in 1992 and 1994, as well as a silver medal in the 1998 Winter Olympics.
Rhéaume played in the League Régionale du Hockey au Féminin in the province of Québec for the Sherbrooke Jofa-Titan. In the 1984 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament, she was the first female goaltender to play for a boys’ team. For the 1991–92 season, Rhéaume joined with the Trois-Rivières Draveurs of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, one of Canada’s top junior ice hockey leagues, making her the first woman to participate in a men’s Major Junior hockey game.
Rhéaume tried out for the Tampa Bay Lightning for the first time in 1992, marking the first time a woman had tried out for an NHL team. She appeared in an exhibition game against the St. Louis Blues in 1993, surrendering two goals on nine shots in one period. She also appeared in another exhibition game against the Boston Bruins in 1993.
Rhéaume was also named to Canada’s national women’s ice hockey team in 1992. She was nominated to the All-Star squad both years after winning gold at the IIHF Women’s World Championships in 1992 and 1994. She was a silver medalist in the Nagano Winter Olympics in 1998.
The Atlanta Knights of the International Hockey League signed Rhéaume in 1992. (IHL). It was the first time a woman played in a regular-season professional game when she made her debut against the Salt Lake Golden Eagles. Rhéaume authored her memoirs, Manon: Alone in Front of the Net, while in Atlanta. In 1997, she announced her retirement from professional hockey.
In June 1998, Rhéaume married Gerry St. Cyr, a roller hockey player and minor league hockey player, whom she divorced later. Dylan and Dokada are their two sons. Dylan St. Cyr is a goalkeeper for Notre Dame, just like his mother. Mission Hockey hired her as the head of worldwide marketing for women’s hockey in 1999. One of her objectives was to assist in the development of women’s hockey skates. In 2008, Rhéaume established the Manon Rhéaume Foundation, which awards scholarships to young women.
Rhéaume is the older sister of Pascal Rhéaume, a former NHL player.
