When he was a player for the Chicago Bears in the National Football League (NFL), Mike Singletary, also known as Samurai Mike, was born on October 9, 1958, in Houston, Texas, the United States. Singletary had a remarkable amount of stamina, appearing on nearly every down and missing just two contests over the course of his 12-year career.
Singletary’s father was an assistant minister who forbade his son from participating in sports until he was in junior high school because of his rigid adherence to church doctrine. The Bears selected Singletary in the second round of the 1981 NFL draught, and he played safety for them for four seasons. With only seven starts in the 1981 season, he still managed to earn All-NFL Rookie Team recognition despite his inexperience. Singletary was the Bears’ first or second-leading tackler in each of his final 10 seasons after securing his position as the team’s starting middle linebacker in 1982. From 1983 to 1992, he was a member of 10 straight Pro Bowl teams and was named to the All-Pro first team seven times. In both 1985 and 1988, he was named the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year after anchoring what is widely regarded as the greatest defensive unit in the history of professional football, the 1985 Bears, who allowed just 12.4 points per game in the regular season and went on to win the Super Bowl by a combined score of 91–10 in the playoffs.
After his playing career ended, Singletary worked as a motivational speaker for a while before transitioning into sports coaching. He joined the Baltimore Ravens in 2003 as linebackers coach and the San Francisco 49ers two years later as the same position. Singletary was named interim head coach after the 49ers fired Mike Nolan at the end of the 2008 season. During the remainder of the season, he guided the team to a 5–4 record and was named the permanent head coach in 2009. The 49ers, on the other hand, struggled under his leadership, and he was fired just before the regular season ended in 2010. Singletary was an assistant coach and linebackers coach for the Minnesota Vikings from 2011 to 2013, and he was a member of the Los Angeles Rams’ coaching staff from 2016 to 2017.
