Min Kao and Gary Burrell co-founded Garmin Corporation in October 1989. This is embedded GPS technologies into navigation systems for a variety of markets. Dr. Kao is credited with designing and developing the groundbreaking GPS device platform that was the base of the first Garmin product range. He also oversees all of Garmin’s global market expansion activities and strategic planning.
Min H. Kao was born in the remote Taiwanese town of Zhushan in the Nantou province in 1949. He received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from National Taiwan University in Taiwan and a doctorate in electrical engineering from the University of Tennessee in 1977.
Kao is the husband of Fan Kao. They have a daughter, Jen Kao, who is a fashion designer, and a son, Ken Kao, who is a filmmaker.
Kao worked as a researcher for NASA and the US Army. He went on to work with Teledyne Systems as a systems analyst, Magnavox Advanced Products as an algorithm builder, and King Radio Corporation as an engineering community chief. He was also employed by AlliedSignal.
