Mukesh Ambani Biography:
Mukesh Dhirubhai Ambani was born on 19 April 1957 in the colony of the British Crown of Aden in Dhirubhai Ambani and Kokilaben Ambani. He had a younger brother named Anil Ambani, and two sisters named Nina Bhadrashyam Kothari and Dipti Dattaraj Salgaocar.
Ambani attended Hill Grange High School in Peddar Road, Mumbai. He then studied at St. Xavier’s College in Mumbai. He then received a degree in Chemical Engineering from the Institute of Chemical Technology.
Ambani later enrolled in an MBA at Stanford University but resigned in 1980 to help his father build Reliance, which was still a small but fast-growing enterprise at the time. His father felt that real-life skills had been harnessed by experience and not by sitting in a classroom. So his father called him back from Stanford to India to take over the yarn production project in his company.
He married Nita Ambani in 1985. The couple had two sons named Anant and Akash, and a daughter named Isha.
Ambani was named “The World’s Richest Sports Team Owner” after purchasing the Mumbai Indians IPL cricket team for $111.9 million in 2008.
Mukesh Ambani is a strict vegetarian and teetotal. He’s a very big fan of Bollywood movies, watching three a week because he says, “you need some quantity of escapism in life.”
At the beginning of 2019, a court in Mumbai held his younger brother, Anil Ambani, in criminal contempt for non-payment of personal debt to the Swedish manufacturer Ericsson. Instead of jail time, the court gave Anil a month to get the money. At the end of the month, Mukesh bailed out his younger brother, paying his debt.
He started helping his father, Dhirubhai Ambani in 1981 to run their family business and Reliance Industries Limited. By this time, it had already expanded to include refining and petrochemicals. The company also included products and services in the retail and telecommunications industries. Reliance Retail Ltd., another subsidiary, is also India’s largest retailer. Since its public launch on 5 September 2016, Reliance’s Jio has earned a top-five position in the country’s telecommunications services.
Ambani was ranked 36 and has held the title of India’s richest person on Forbes Magazine’s list for the past 10 years. He is the only Indian businessman on Forbes’ list of the most powerful people in the world. As of October 2020, Forbes ranked Mukesh Ambani as the sixth richest person in the world.
He is also the richest person in the world outside of North America and Europe. As of 2015, according to the Chinese Hurun Research Institute, Ambani ranked fifth among India’s philanthropists. He was appointed Director of Bank of America and became the first non-American to be on its board of directors.
He also owns the Indian Premier League franchise Mumbai Indians and is the founder of the Indian Super League, a football league in India. He resides in the Antilia Building, one of the most expensive private residences in the world, worth up to $1 billion.
