Shaktikanta Das is a former Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the Tamil Nadu cadre from the 1980 batch. He was a member of the Fifteenth Finance Commission and India’s Sherpa to the G20 before becoming the 25th governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

Shaktikanta Das was born on 26 February 1957, in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India. He is 61 years old. His birth sign is Pisces. He attended Bhubaneswar’s Demonstration Multipurpose School before earning bachelor’s (BA) and master’s (MA) degrees in history from the University of Delhi’s St. Stephen’s College.

Das worked for the Indian government and the Tamil Nadu government in a number of capacities, including Principal Secretary (Industries), Special Commissioner (Revenue), Secretary (Revenue), Secretary (Commercial Taxes), project director of the Tamil Nadu State AIDS Management Society, and district magistrate and collector of the Dindigul and Kancheepuram districts in the Tamil Nadu government.

Das also spent time on deputation to a private sector corporation with Mahindra Industrial Park Ltd (Mahindra World City) under Rule 6(2)(ii) of the Indian Administrative Service (Cadre) Rules, 1954.

In June 2014, the prime minister-led Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) named Das as Union Revenue Secretary; he assumed the role on June 16, 2014, and demitted it on August 31, 2015. After being granted a three-month extension by the administration, Das was named Union Economic Affairs Secretary by the ACC in August 2014. He assumed the role of Secretary on 31 August 2015, and admitted it and simultaneously superannuated from service on 28 May 2017.

Das was generally regarded as one of India’s most influential civil servants during his time as Union Economic Affairs Secretary. On December 11, 2018, the ACC named Das as Governor of the Reserve Bank of India for a three-year term, succeeding Urjit Patel, who had resigned the day before.

Das’ appointment as RBI governor has largely been greeted positively, with DBS Bank’s head of markets for India in Singapore, Ashish Vaidya, claiming that previous RBI governors with an IAS history, such as Y. Venugopal Reddy and Duvvuri Subbarao, had been good, and that Das’ “cordial ties with the government likely support policy negotiations.”

On December 12, 2018, Das took over as Governor of the Reserve Bank of India. The markets reacted positively to Das’ nomination, with the BSE SENSEX rising 629 points and the NIFTY 50 rising 188 points. Das serves as the RBI governor’s ex-officio chair of the central bank’s Monetary Policy Committee. On October 25, 2020, Das announced that he had tested positive for Covid-19.
