One of the top San Francisco blues-rockers of the late ’60s and one of the most popular pop/rock acts of the mid-to-late ’70s are two distinct eras in Steve Miller’s career. Early recordings established his early style as a blues-rocker inspired but not overshadowed by psychedelic influences.
For The Joker in 1973, Miller reinvented himself as a blues-influenced pop/rocker who penned compact melodic and catchy tunes, resulting in platinum success and a number one hit for the title track. Fly Like an Eagle surpassed its predecessor in quality and sales three years later. Before returning to his blues-rock roots again in the early 1980s, he temporarily adopted a new wave tinge and even topped the charts with the synthy “Abracadabra.”
Miller’s father, a pathologist, introduced him to musicians like Charles Mingus and Les Paul, who came to their house as house guests and taught the young Miller some chords and let him sit in on a recording session with the legends. At the age of 12, he and childhood buddy Boz Scaggs founded the Marksmen Combo, a blues band. Later, at the University of Wisconsin, they formed the Ardells, which evolved into the Fabulous Night Trains. To get involved in the Chicago blues scene, Miller relocated to the city in 1964 and formed a band with Barry Goldberg for two years.
After moving to San Francisco, he created the first Steve Miller Blues Band with James “Curly” Cooke, Lonnie Turner, and Tim Davis on guitar, bass, and drums, respectively. In 1967, the band supported Chuck Berry at a Fillmore show that was ultimately released as a live album. It was the first of several lineup changes when Scaggs relocated to San Francisco later that year and replaced Cooke just in time to perform at the Monterey Pop Festival. After the festival, Capitol signed the band as the Steve Miller Band.
This album was lauded by critics and gained some broadcast on FM radio while the band was in London recording it. Psychedelic influence but not overpowering affected Miller’s early style of blues-rock. After Sailor, which peaked at number 24 on the Billboard album charts and solidified Miller’s fan base, many considered it Miller’s best early effort.
Even though “Space Cowboy” and “Brave New World” had become FM rock standards, pop radio failed to catch up on Miller’s material at this time, despite the fact that he was still a popular performer. This run was broken by Rock Love, which was out in 1971 and had an underwhelming band line-up as well as subpar material. When Miller fractured his neck in a vehicle accident and suffered hepatitis, he was forced to miss most of 1972 and the first few months of 1973.
As he recovered from his injury, Miller reinvented himself as a blues-influenced pop/rocker who wrote concise, melodic, and enticing tunes. With over four million copies sold, Fly Like an Eagle was a huge success despite the lengthy gap between its release and that of its predecessor. In addition to “Rock’s Me,” which became Miller’s second No. 1 song, the album spawned a slew of other hits.
Over three million copies were sold, and several singles were produced as a result of the success of Book of Dreams. To date, approximately six million copies of Miller’s Greatest Hits 1974-1978 have been sold, and it continues to be a sought-after collector’s item.
Miller again took a break, returning in late 1981 with Circle of Love, which was a disappointment. Abracadabra, Miller’s third number-one single, was released just six months later. Because of this, there were no more ’80s albums that were critically or commercially successful: Italian X Rays, 1984; Living in the 20th Century, 1986; and Born 2B Blue, 1988.
It was about this time in the early 1990s that Miller returned to his best with Wide River (the title tune earning a Top 40 chart entry) and the release of an extensive retrospective box set put together by the artist himself. Miller toured with Joe Cocker in 2008 and continued to lead gigs into the 2000s, sharing the bill with other classic rock performers.
It was also reported that he would be releasing a new R&B cover album. For their first album on Space Cowboy Records, the band put out Bingo! in 2010. In 1982, Abracadabra, Bingo! debuted at No. 37 on Billboard’s Top 200, his greatest position since then. Let Your Hair Down, released in 2011, debuted at No. 189 on the Billboard 200.
It wasn’t uncommon for the band Steve Miller to make headlines since they toured frequently through 2010. Of them, Miller’s 2016 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was the most remarkable, as it was distinguished by Miller’s severe conflicts with the institution.
