Sunil Jakhar is the President of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee in India. He was elected three times in a row from the Abohar constituency (2002-2017) and served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha from 2012 to 2017. He belongs to the Indian National Congress (INC).
Sunil Jakhar was born on 9 February 1954, in Pankosi, Fazilka, Punjab, India. He is 67 years old. His birth sign is Aquarius. The name of his father is Balram Jakhar and the name of his mother is not known.
In 2002, he was elected to the Punjab Vidhan Sabha from Abohar for the first time. He was re-elected from Abohar in 2007 and 2012. After winning a by-election in Gurdaspur, he was elected to parliament.
In by-poll elections in 2017, he was nominated by the Congress for the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha constituency, which he won by nearly 2 lakh votes and is now an elected MP. At the 2014 general elections, he was refused a Lok Sabha seat.
Following the death of Vinod Khanna, he was given the chance to run for the Gurdaspur constituency, which he won by a landslide. For the 2019 general elections, he was re-nominated by Congress from the same district. He was up against veteran actor Sunny Deol, who was running for the BJP. He finally had to accept defeat at the hands of Sunny Deol, who won by a landslide.
On January 7, 2017, Jakhar filed a complaint with the Punjab chief election officer, alleging that while in a Fazilka jail, local Shiromani Akali Dal leader Shivlal Doda and his nephew Waris / others used seven separate mobile numbers.
