Suvendu Adhikari is a Bharatiya Janata Party politician from India. He represents Nandigram in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. He is the present Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Vidhan Sabha, having been nominated by 22 BJP MLAs, including Mukul Roy. In West Bengal, he was the minister of Transport, Irrigation, and Water Resources. As an All India Trinamool Congress candidate from Tamluk, he served in the 15th and 16th Lok Sabhas (2014-2016).

He is the son of the former Union Minister of State for Rural Development Sisir Adhikari, who served in the Manmohan Singh government.

Suvendu Adhikari, a member of the Legislative Assembly from Contai, is credited with galvanizing the people of Nandigram under the umbrella of the Bhumi Uchhed Pratirodh Committee when rumors of land acquisition for a chemical hub sparked a movement. By a margin of 1,72,958 votes, Suvendu defeated CPI(M) strongman Lakshman Seth. On December 19, 2020, he resigned from the All India Trinamool Congress and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in the presence of Home Minister Amit Shah. In 2021, he defeated TMC supremo and Former Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee by a margin of 1956 votes in the Nandigram assembly seat.

Suvendu Adhikari Biography:

Suvendu Adhikari was born on December 15, 1970, in Karkuli, Purba Medinipur district, West Bengal. His father’s name is Sisir Adhikari and his mother’s name is Gayatri Adhikari. Suvendu’s father is a politician and former Minister of State in Manmohan Singh’s second ministry. He was appointed to the Lok Sabha from Kanthi in 2019. Soumen, one of Suvendu’s brothers, is the chairman of Kanthi Municipal Corporation. Dibyendu Adhikari, who was appointed to the Lok Sabha from Tamluk in 2019, is also his brother. Netaji Subhas Open University awarded Suvendu a Master of Arts degree.

Career:

Suvendu Adhikari was appointed as a councilor for the Indian National Congress in the Contai Municipality for the first time in 1995. Adhikari was appointed to West Bengal Legislative Assembly from the Kanthi Dakshin constituency in 2006. In the same year, he was elected chairman of the Kanthi Municipal Corporation.

Adhikari spearheaded the anti-land-acquisition movement in Nandigram in 2007. He was the chairman of the Bhumi Uchhed Pratirodh Committee. West Bengal’s ruling Left Front government planned to buy 10,000 acres of land in the village to establish a special economic zone. Mamata Banerjee was catapulted to the forefront of Bengali politics as a result of this movement. The state CID accused Adhikari of supplying arms to the Maoists in order for them to wage an armed rebellion against the state government.

Following Adhikari’s success in Nandigram, Banerjee appointed him as the party’s observer (in-charge) of the Jangal Mahal, which included the districts of Paschim Medinipur, Purulia, and Bankura. He was able to broaden the party’s base in these districts. He was appointed to the Lok Sabha from the Tamluk constituency in 2009. He defeated his closest competitor, Lakshman Seth of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), by about 173,000 votes.

Adhikari faced Abdul Kadir Sheikh of the Left Front-Indian National Congress alliance in the Nandigram constituency in the 2016 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election. He decided to quit as an MP from the Tamluk constituency after being elected. On May 27, 2016, he was appointed as the Minister of Transport in the Second Mamata Banerjee Ministry. On November 26, 2020, Adhikari retired as chairman of the Hooghly River Bridge Commission (HRBC), a statutory body under the Government of West Bengal. On November 27, 2020, he also resign as West Bengal Transport Minister. On 16 December 2020, he announced his resignation as MLA to the speaker of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, which was initially rejected by the speaker due to a technicality. However, it was finally accepted on December 21, 2020. On December 17, 2020, he retired as a primary member of the All India Trinamool Congress.

In the presence of Home Minister Amit Shah, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on December 19, 2020. In 2021, he defeated West Bengal’s sitting chief minister on the Nandigram assembly seat.

Controversies:

In September 2014, Adhikari was questioned by the Central Bureau of Investigation about his alleged involvement in the Saradha Group financial scandal. Sudipto Sen, the company’s CEO, allegedly met Adhikari before fleeing to Kashmir, according to a former employee. Such allegations were refuted by Adhikari.
