Tim Sweeney is a computer game programmer, entrepreneur, and conservationist from the United States. He is the designer and CEO of Epic Games and the developer of the Unreal Engine, a game production tool.
Sweeney was born on 1 March 1970, in Potomac, Maryland, United States. He began tinkering with mechanical and electrical equipment at a young age, claiming to have taken apart a lawnmower when he was five or six years old and then building his own go-kart.
When arcade games became popular in the late 1970s, he became fascinated because he knew that, much like the mechanic’s systems he dismantled and rebuilt, there were those who programmed the games in the consoles. Outside of Adventure, Sweeney was not involved in the games for the Atari 2600 and later said that he had not played many video games in his life and had just completed a few.
Sweeney went to his older brother’s new startup in California when he was 11 years old, where he had access to the first IBM Personal Computers. Sweeney spent a week there studying BASIC and establishing his interest in programming; although he had previously used a Commodore 64, Sweeney was even more impressed by how simple the IBM PC was to use. Sweeney started learning how to program on an Apple II after his family received one, with the aim of creating Adventure 2 in the style of the Atari 2600 title.
Sweeney estimates that between the ages of 11 and 15, he spent over 10,000 hours teaching himself how to program using knowledge from internet message boards and that he played many games, which he never shared with anyone. Entrepreneurship principles were also taught to him by his brothers. He made a lot of money as a youth by promising to mow the lawns of rich locals for half the price of expensive lawn-mowing services.
Sweeney began studying mechanical engineering at the University of Maryland in 1989, though he remained intrigued with computers. His aunt, a Defense Mapping Agency employee, gave him an IBM Personal Computer/AT about this time. Sweeney started a tech consultancy firm, Potomac Computer Systems, out of his parent’s house, but it didn’t take off, so he put it on hold. Sweeney then came up with the concept of making games that could be sold, and he began programming them after school or on weekends. To program the game, he needed to first develop a text editor based on the Pascal language, which contributed to the concept of turning the text editor into a game. ZZT was born from this.
He solicited input from his college peers and neighbours, and he was well aware that this was something he could market to other machine users. Sweeney turned to the shareware model to distribute the game, writing to Scott Miller of Apogee Software, Ltd., a major shareware developer at the time, for advice.
With the assistance of his aunt, he resurrected Potomac Computer Systems to market ZZT and fill mail orders. Sweeney wanted to make a career out of making games after ZZT sold well enough, a few copies per day bringing in about US$100 per day. He renamed Potomac Computer Systems to Epic MegaGames after realizing that he wanted a better name for a video game venture.
