Noel Jones is a Pentecostal bishop and a Jamaican-American pastor. He is the head pastor of Gardena, California’s City of Refuge Church. Jones was born on January 31, 1950, in Spanish Town, Jamaica. Bishop Robert and Marjorie Jones had a total of seven children.
He was reared in a family with a wide range of siblings. In 1965, his parents moved him and his two younger siblings, Chris and Grace, to Syracuse, New York.
Jones was called to ministry when he was 19 years old. He graduated from St. Jago High School and went on to Aenon Bible College to earn a Bachelor of Science in Theology. Later, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the International Circle of Faith College. He accepted his first pastorate at Bethel Temple of Longview in Longview, Texas, when he was 26 years old.
Jones was appointed in June 1994 to succeed Bishop Robert W. McMurray as pastor of the Greater Bethany Community Church, which is located at 84th and Hoover Street in South Los Angeles, California.
During his tenure, the church’s membership grew to the point that, in 2003, a new structure in Gardena, California, was purchased. The new refuge, dubbed “The City of Refuge,” already has a membership of 17,000 people.
The City of Refuge Sanctuary Choir is a choir in the church. Welcome to the City, their debut album, debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 list and number one on the Billboard Top Gospel Albums list in 2007. Sophie Fiennes, an English film director and producer, released a documentary film called Hoover Street Revival about the Greater Bethany Community Church in 2002.
