Umar Khalid, also known as Syed Umar Khalid, is a student activist from India who once served as the head of the Democratic Students’ Union (DSU) at Jawaharlal Nehru University. Khalid was born Umar Khalid. It is reported that he was engaged in the sedition controversy at Jawaharlal Nehru University and is accused under the UAPA statute. In addition, Khalid is involved in the United Against Hate (UAH) movement, which was established in July 2017 with Nadeem Khan, a social activist, as a reaction to a string of lynchings in the United States.

After completing his doctoral degree, he submitted research work to the journal Social Scientist in 2018 titled “Changing Village Authority in an Adivasi Hinterland: State, Community, and Contingencies of Rule in Singhbhum, 1830–1897.”On February 9, 2016, students at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) staged a demonstration on their campus against the execution of Kashmiri separatist Maqbool Bhat and the 2001 Indian Parliament attack prisoner Afzal Guru. The two men were given the death penalty for their roles in the assault on the Indian Parliament.
Kanhaiya Kumar, the president of the JNU Student Union, was taken into custody by the Delhi Police four days after the incident and charged with sedition and criminal conspiracy. Umar Khalid and four other pupils, including themselves, concealed themselves. Following their return ten days later, Umar Khaled and Anirban Bhattacharya were subsequently arrested. The arrest, as well as the use of sedition charges, was widely criticized as a form of political repression intended to silence political criticism.
Several students were subjected to various sanctions after being investigated by a committee that the JNU administration constituted. Kanhaiya Kumar was given a punishment of 10,000 rupees, while Anirban Bhattacharya and Umar Khalid were both expelled from the university for one semester. In July 2021, Khalid submitted a bail plea; however, after an eight-month lengthy hearing, his bid for release was denied. In its ruling granting Khalid bail, the court said that the charges leveled against him were plausible on their face and that it was clear that he had a part in the “context of conspiracy” surrounding the riots in Delhi. In March 2022, the judge did not allow Khalid to post bond. According to an Additional Sessions Judge named Amitabh Rawat, Khalid’s bail application had “no merit and substance” and hence should not be granted.
The Wire published Khalid’s answer to an open letter on September 13, 2022, the same day he completed two years in Tihar Jail for violating the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, often known as UAPA. The Delhi Police charged Khalid with participating in the riots that occurred in 2020 in Delhi. He claims that by using the UAPA, people trying to frame us may keep us in prison for years without providing evidence against us.
