Vikram (South) Biography:
Vikram was born on April 17, 1966. He’s known worldwide by his stage name, Vikram. He was born to a Christian father and a Hindu mother as Kennedy. His dad’s name is John Victor. He was born in Paramakudi and ran away from home to start a career in film. The name of Vikram’s mother is Rajeshwari. She’s been a sub-collector. The name of her brother is Thiagarajan. He is a well-established director and actor in the Tamil film industry.
Vikram was educated at Montfort School in Yercaud and graduated in 1983. Despite expressing his interest in joining movies after school, his father forced him to go through school. He then graduated from Loyola College, Chennai with a degree in English Literature and worked halfway through the MBA program.
He started to appear in stage productions, including college adaptations by The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial and Peter Shaffer’s Black Comedy, receiving the best actor awards for his performances. After winning the Best Actor Award at the IIT Madras event, Vikram was hit by a truck on his motorbike on his way home and suffered serious leg injuries. Vikram brought back to finish the final year of his degree after the accident.
Vikram started his career in the film En Kadhal Kanmani in 1990. However, the success of Bala’s tragic film Sethu (1999), in which Vikram appeared as a villain turned lover, led to Vikram’s successful career as an actor. In the early 2000s, Vikram emerged in a series of masala films, including Dhill (2001), Gemini (2002), Dhool (2003), and Saamy (2003). Vikram has also appeared in various roles of disadvantaged people, including Kasi (2001), Samurai (2002), and Pithamagan (2003). He achieved further successes in Anniyan (2005), Kanthaswamy (2009), Raavanan (2010), and Deiva Thirumagal (2011).
Vikram met Shailaja Balakrishnan and married her in 1992. The couple had a daughter, Akshita, born in 1993, and a son, Dhruv, born in 1997.
Vikram started his professional career by modeling in advertising films. He was known by the film industry during the final year of his M.B.A program at Loyola College. Vikram made his film debut in 1990 when he appeared in En Kadhal Kanmani. He then signed up to be part of the filmmaker P. C. Sriram’s college love story Meera, with high expectations, but the three films failed to start his career.
His appearances in Meera and Kaaval Geetham helped him secure film offers from the Malayalam and Telugu film industries. In 1993, he almost signed up to appear in Mani Ratnam’s Bombay and appeared in the first photoshoot next to Manisha Koirala. However, Mani Ratnam wanted Vikram to remove his beard because of the role, and Vikram could not do so because of the continuity problems with another film he had signed and was therefore out of the project.
Vikram emerged in a series of films in which he presented supporting roles between 1993 and 1994. He has appeared in three successful Malayalam films. He played a leading role in the film Mayoora Nritam in Malayalam. Vikram signed the first Tamil-language film production by Amitabh Bachchan, Ullaasam, which also featured Ajith Kumar and Maheswari. The big-budget film made anticipation before the release but was run at the box office on average.
In 1997, the debutant director Bala granted him the role of the villain Sethu in the film Sethu. Sethu was finally released in December 1999 and initially started acting at a single noon show at the suburban theatre, but gradually gained audiences through word-of-mouth publicity. Eventually, it ran for over a hundred days in a number of cinemas across Chennai.
For sixty-five days after Sethu’s release, Vikram did not sign up for a film to make sure he made the right career move. His next film was Dhill, where he played an aspiring police officer, Kanagavel, who was attacking a corrupt police officer. In order to appear trim in the role of the aspiring police officer, Vikram went on a strict diet, eating only fruit and drinking juice. The film was opened to positive reviews. Subsequently, Dhill became Vikram’s first success in the genre of the masala film, leading the way for more such films in the same genre. Vikram’s representation of a blind folk singer in Vinayan’s Kasi won him the Best Tamil Actor Filmfare Award and the film also did well commercially.
Film and television work:
Besides acting, Vikram has also been part of other film-making processes with credits as a playback singer and as an assistant director. In 2000, Vikram and actress Meena released a pop album called Kadhalism, for which the pair would sing and appear in music videos, even though the project was finished without much development.
Vikram has promoted different social causes, with several of his charitable works linked to the characters he has portrayed in his films. He was the brand ambassador of the Sanjeevani Trust and the special children’s school of Vidya Sudha, where he stayed while making Deiva Thirumagal. He has also had a strong connection since the making of his film Kasi with Kasi Eye Care, which makes eye surgeries for the poor free.
Vikram has also set up the Vikram Foundation through his fan club to provide heart surgery for the poor, educate poor children and rebuild victims of natural disasters. Every year Vikram celebrated his birthday doing charity work across Tamil Nadu. In 2008, he planned a camp where a thousand of his fans gave their eyes in an eye donation appeal.
