Kanhaiya Kumar was born on 13 January 1987 in the Bihat village of Begusarai, Bihar. His age is aged 33 years old. Capricorn is his zodiac sign. The village is part of the Teghra (constituency of Vidhan Sabha), considered to be a CPI stronghold. The father of Kumar is Jaishankar Singh. His mother is an Anganwadi worker, Meena Devi. Kanhaiya Kumar belongs to the Bhumihar Community family of the Upper Caste. His dad, Jaishankar Singh, was a farmer who died on November 4, 2016. His mother, Meena Devi, is an Anganwadi worker; she supports the election campaign of Kanhaiya by conducting a Tiffin service with Juhi, the sister of Kanhaiya. Kanhaiya has two brothers, Manikant Singh, Assam’s factory boss, and a pupil, Prince Kumar.

Kanhaiya Kumar studied at the Madhya Vidyalaya, Masnadpur, until Class VI, before joining R. At Barauni, K. C. High School. Kumar took part in many plays and events during his school days organized by IPTA (Indian People’s Theatre Association), a left-leaning cultural community that goes back to the days of the freedom movement in India. In 2002, with a first division, he cleared his Class X board examinations. Kumar entered Ram Ratan Singh College at Mokama after school, taking up science in Class XI-XII. In 2007, he graduated in geography from the College of Commerce, Arts and Science, Patna, earning a first-class degree.


While at the College of Commerce in Patna, Kumar started to engage in student politics. He joined the AISF and was chosen as a delegate at its conference in Patna a year later. He moved to Delhi after completing his postgraduate degree with an MA in sociology from Nalanda Open University in Patna, again securing a first-class, and entered Jawaharlal Nehru University after ranking first in the entrance exam in 2011, where he completed a Ph.D. in African Studies at the School of International Studies. In February 2019, he completed his Ph.D., entitled The Decolonisation and Social Change Process in South Africa, 1994-2015.

Kumar became president of the JNU students’ union, representing the AISF, in September 2015. “The first inspiration who made me want to join politics was Bhagat Singh. In October 2016, Kumar’s autobiography, Bihar to Tihar: My Political Journey, was published. From his childhood days to his political activity in Delhi, the book was his life.

He was elected to the Communist Party of India (CPI) Party National Council on 29 April 2018.[19] He was later inducted into the CPI National Executive Council in 2019. In 2004, Kanhaiya joined the All India Students’ Federation (AISF). He was interested in college politics in 2011, after being admitted to Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). He became the first AISF member to be elected President of the JNU Student Union in September 2015. (JNUSU). After the JNU controversy, he shot to fame and many journalists and politicians said that he would enter active politics; as he was getting encouragement and support for speaking out against the government from all over the world. Kanhaiya was released from jail; as no proof was found against him, it was found that the video circulating the news was tampered with. Later, it was discovered that the anti-national slogans had been posed by some outsiders, not by Kanhaiya Kumar or the JNU students.

He was elected to the 125-member National Council of India’s Communist Party on 29 April 2018. (CPI). From the Begusarai seat of Bihar, he was granted a ticket to contest the 2019 General Elections. However, by a margin of 4.22 lakh votes, he lost the election to the BJP’s Giriraj Singh.
