Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar, better known by his stage name Vijay, is an Indian actor, dancer, playback singer, and philanthropist who is most known for his work in Tamil films but has also starred in films in other Indian languages.
Vijay began his cinema career as a child actor in the 1984 film Vetri and went on to appear in films like Kudumbam (1984), Vasantha Raagam (1986), Sattam Oru Vilayaattu (1987), and Ithu Engal Neethi (1988). He also appeared as a kid actor in the 1985 film Naan Sigappu Manithan, which co-starred Rajinikanth.
Vijay began playing main parts at the age of 18 in Naalaiya Theerpu, after appearing as a child artist in his father’s films (1992). Sendhoorapandi (1993), in which Vijay co-starred with Vijayakanth, was only moderately successful at the box office. His debut picture, Rasigan, was released in 1994, and while it was a commercial success, it was not well received by critics.
Vijay was given the prefix Ilaya Thalapathy for the first time in this film, an appellation by which he was recognised among fans and the media for the remainder of his career. He featured in films like Deva and Rajavin Parvaiyile, the latter of which he co-starred with actor Ajith Kumar. After that, he appeared in the romantic comedies Vishnu and Chandralekha. In early 1995, he appeared in the romantic comedy flick Coimbatore Mappillai.
Vijay reunited with filmmaker Siddique for the romantic comedy Kaavalan, a Tamil adaptation of the Malayalam film Bodyguard, in early 2011. The Chinese film Kaavalan was presented at the Shanghai International Film Festival. Kaavalan was a financial success in China and garnered positive reviews from Chinese viewers. His next film, the action picture Velayudham, directed by M. Raja and produced by Venu Ravichandran, was released around Diwali of the same year.
Velayudham was one of the year’s highest-grossing films. For the third time, Vijay tried his hand at being a superhero in Velayudham, in which his outfit and fighting technique drew comparisons to the Assassin’s Creed trilogy, with critics claiming he was perfect for the part. Velayudham became a hit with Japanese viewers and received critical acclaim.
Nelson Dilipkumar was announced as the director of Vijay’s 65th film, produced by Sun Pictures, which had previously produced his hit flick Sarkar, in December 2020. Anirudh Ravichander created the music soundtrack for the film, which is billed as a gangster picture. It is a pan-Indian film that will be released in 2022 in Tamil, Hindi, and Telugu.
