You may see Irish people dispute by simply asking a bunch of Irish soccer enthusiasts, “What do you think of Roy Keane?” and then standing back to observe. Roy Keane is second only to RTE football analyst Eamon Dunphy in terms of being a contentious character in Irish soccer as far as he is concerned.

Roy Keane was already a contentious character, but the events that transpired during the build-up to the 2002 World Cup football finals in Saipan will follow him wherever he goes. In the case of Roy Keane, an Irish soccer legend, the phrase “flawed genius” has ever been used to a person. Keane was a real genius on the soccer field, but with that skill came a temperamental brittleness that saw him get himself into several incidents both on and off the field.

Keane grew up in Mayfield, a working-class district of Cork City, where he was born and reared. As a child, he participated in GAA and briefly dabbled in boxing, but his primary athletic passion has always been soccer. In the early 1980s, Roy joined the legendary soccer Cork academy Rockmount AFC, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. Despite the fact that he was only nine years old, he was named player of the year while playing football for the Under-11s squad in his first year of football.

It was Match of the Day, in which he could follow the development of his favorite English side, Tottenham Hotspur, that was his favorite show. Glenn Hoddle and Bryan Robson were two of the greatest footballers of all time. It had always been his ambition to play football for a top-tier English soccer club since he was a child.

However, throughout Roy Keane’s formative years, neither the League of Ireland nor the FAI Cup was won by Cork. Despite the rich and diverse history of Cork football, there were no victories for the county during his formative years. As a complement to the newly founded League of Ireland’s Premier League, a new first division was established in the 1985/86 season as a first division. Cobh Ramblers were one of the first members of the First Division, and it was here that Keane learned how to take care of himself on the soccer field.

Roy joined the Cobh Ramblers in 1989 after nine years with the Rockmount Rangers. The First Division was a tough competition in which no one was held back and harsh tackles were the rule rather than the exception. It was not a place for those who were afraid to speak their minds. In spite of the difficult footballing environment, the youngster known as Roy Keane stood out from the crowds. Anyone who saw him play could tell that he was driven and had natural skill.

In February 1990, a scout from Nottingham Forest came to see him play against Belvedere Boys FC at Fairview Park in Dublin, and he impressed him. Roy Keane was granted his first professional contract in English football after only one trial with Nottingham Forest. This marked the beginning of a stormy relationship between a sports force of nature and the broader world of professional football in the years that followed. Neither of them ever truly felt completely at ease with the other.

It took Roy a little bit to get used to his new surroundings in Nottingham. He suffered from homesickness at times, but Brian Clough, who is not known for his compassion, dealt with Keane in a delicate way and allowed him to return home to Mayfield for a few days on occasion. Clough chose to do this despite the fact that it conflicted with Keane’s training schedule. Clough had a keen eye for seeing potential on the soccer field.

His understanding of Roy Keane, and possibly the realization that if he did not treat him with compassion, he could lose him, pushed him to take a more conciliatory approach. Even then, Keane’s irritability could be sensed, but Clough was able to strike a compromise between his own demands for discipline and Roy’s need for some leeway. Moreover, as Keane himself acknowledged in his memoir, “It just so happened that I was at the right club at the right moment. That’s what you’ve been hoping for.”

Roy had an immediate impact with Nottingham Forest, and after he had improved his fitness to the requisite standards, he was a regular in the first team for the remainder of the season. In 1991, he competed in the FA Cup final against Tottenham Hotspur, a team that he has supported since he was a child.

In 1992, he competed in the League Cup Final, when he was up against his future employers Manchester United. Forest was defeated in both finals, but the name Roy Keane was on the lips of many of the league’s top teams. While Roy’s reputation was growing, his team was slipping farther and further towards relegation, despite his outstanding exploits on the soccer field.

In 1993, after a short stint with Blackburn Rovers, Roy Keane moved for Manchester United for £3.75 million, which was the then-record transfer cost in English soccer at the time. Sir Alex Ferguson, the manager of Manchester United, had been a long-time fan of Keane and had been fascinated by Roy’s seeming lack of regard for people’s reputations. Especially noteworthy was the first time United faced Forest with Keane in their lineup, as highlighted by the media afterward.

Roy went in for a challenge with Manchester United’s teak-hard captain Bryan Robson early in the game and rudely upended the seasoned English international. Ferguson could tell from Roy’s cameo appearance that he had a strong drive to win and that this might be used to the club’s advantage as they pursued their Holy Grail, a victory in the Champions League final, in the next season.

Manchester United had just won the Premier League for the first time since the heyday of George Best, Bobby Charlton, and Denis Law, and they were celebrating. The club had an excellent mix of seasoned professionals and up-and-coming new talents. It was practically the ideal environment for the young Roy Keane to grow up in.

Great players with much experience, such as Robson, Paul Ince, Steve Bruce, and Eric Cantona, would help him along the way… Young stars such as Ryan Giggs, David Beckham, and the Neville twins were on hand to jolt him out of any lingering sense of complacency that he may be experiencing (however remote the chance). Keane found a squad with a similar mindset and a determination to win at any cost in this United team, and they were successful in their endeavors.

During his 12 years with the club, Roy Keane and Manchester United enjoyed an unprecedented run of success, winning seven Premier League titles, four FA Cups, one Champions League title (despite missing the final due to suspension, he was still awarded a winners medal), one Intercontinental Cup, and four FA Community Shields.

Keane led Manchester United from 1997 to 2001, taking over from Eric Cantona, and is widely regarded as one of the most inspirational leaders the club has ever had.
